Focus Is The New Super Power: Cultivating Depth in A Distracted Generation

Social media and infinite scrolling have wired us to be shallow in this world where every notification from emails, friends, and calls battle for our attention. I grew up battling myself to gain focus and not be distracted by this act that redirects our attention to unproductive circumstances.

Basically, in my own understanding, deep work means the ability to focus deeply and intensively on a task without any distractions. We are all humans, we have our limit, but most people limit themself because they believe that is their limit. I have always had an interest in deep work and full focus in everything I do because I believe, if we want to do anything, we should always do it fully so as not to be distracted by things around us.

One of the major factors that has caused a deep distraction to me from fulfilling my deep work task is social media, wanting to check and see what everyone is doing at the moment and following trends. Deep work doesn't just happen accidentally, it demands a well-planned structure and commitment.

In my generation, we are very distracted by social media, and this is really affecting a lot of us. I focus on and grow. I am also one of them. It's really hard for me to go a full day without engaging in any social media, and I really enjoy every bit of it, but I started having this urge to get more money and make my family proud. That is when I started gaining my full focus. We cannot push ourselves to our full potential if we don't make up our mind that we want something or we don't have a deep drive for something.

One of the major reasons why I said focus is the new superpower is because it is really hard to gain focus on something, especially in this distracted world we are in, where everyone and everybody is being disturbed and distracted by things around us.

My stance on Deep work, based on my experience, is that Multitasking, the ability to do more than one thing at the same time, is my stance on deep work. It is sometimes really tough, especially when one of the tasks requires you to gain full focus, and at the same time, you also have to work on the other. I must engage in multitasking because I have not gotten and achieved the goal I really want to achieve, I am still yet to aim for it, and sometimes I am even distracted by social media, so I fail to do one task over another, and this seems really tough to engage in.

One way I try to succeed in carrying out deep work and fighting out my deep wars is by doing things I love because this is one thing that can make us gain full focus in anything we do, things like listening to music, and taking breaks when necessary. After all, this is one of the things that makes deep work interesting to do and carry out with ease.

This is my entry to the Weekly Digi Prompt.

This really caught my attention because that’s actually the main drive for focus. If what I’m doing doesn’t interest me, then there’s no reason why distractions can’t become a problem.
