A few days ago, I overheard some guests talking enthusiastically about their room. They mentioned the comfort, the cleanliness, and especially the beautiful swans made from towels waiting for them on the bed.

They saw a lovely detail.

I saw Gladys.

One of the things I have learned over the years is that many of the people who make a place special are rarely the ones who receive the attention. Their work is done quietly, without applause, but its impact is felt every day.

Gladys is one of those people.

She is one of the room attendants at the hotel where I work. At sixty years old, she still carries out her duties with the same dedication and care that have earned her the respect of coworkers and guests alike.

What makes her different is her talent for transforming ordinary towels into beautiful figures. Swans, flowers, hearts, and other creations appear almost magically in the rooms she prepares.

Guests often take photographs of them before unpacking their suitcases.

One day I asked her how she had learned to do it.

Her answer surprised me.

She told me that long before she worked in the hotel, she used to make simple figures with sheets and pieces of fabric at home to entertain her children. Life was not always easy, and there were times when there were few toys, few distractions, and many worries. Creating those little surprises became her way of bringing smiles to her family.

Gladys creates it with whatever she has at hand.

Perhaps that is why I admire her so much.

As I begin this series, I can think of no better person to introduce than Gladys. She represents so many hardworking women whose contributions often go unnoticed, even though they help hold entire workplaces, families, and communities together.

Hace unos días escuché a unos huéspedes comentar con entusiasmo lo mucho que les había gustado su habitación. Hablaron de la comodidad, de la limpieza y, especialmente, de los hermosos cisnes hechos con toallas que los esperaban sobre la cama.

Ellos veían un bonito detalle.

Yo veía a Gladys.

Una de las cosas que he aprendido con los años es que muchas de las personas que hacen especial un lugar casi nunca son las que reciben la atención. Su trabajo se realiza en silencio, sin aplausos, pero sus resultados se sienten cada día.

Gladys es una de esas personas.

Es una de las camareras de habitaciones del hotel donde trabajo. A sus sesenta años sigue realizando sus labores con la misma dedicación y esmero que le han ganado el respeto de compañeros y huéspedes.

Lo que la distingue es su talento para transformar simples toallas en hermosas figuras. Cisnes, flores, corazones y otras creaciones aparecen casi como por arte de magia en las habitaciones que prepara.

Muchos huéspedes les toman fotografías antes incluso de deshacer sus maletas.

Un día le pregunté cómo había aprendido a hacer aquello.

Me contó que mucho antes de trabajar en el hotel ya hacía figuras sencillas con sábanas y pedazos de tela para entretener a sus hijos cuando eran pequeños. Lo que una vez sirvió para alegrar el día de unos niños hoy alegra el día de viajeros que llegan desde diferentes lugares del mundo.

Aquella conversación me hizo comprender que las figuras de toallas son solo una pequeña parte de lo que realmente representa Gladys.

La misma creatividad que utiliza en su trabajo la ayuda a enfrentar los desafíos cotidianos de su hogar. Cuando algo se rompe, encuentra una solución. Cuando los recursos son escasos, inventa alternativas. Cuando aparecen dificultades, las enfrenta con paciencia y determinación.

Hay personas que crean belleza con pinceles o con música.

Gladys la crea con lo que tenga a mano.

Quizás por eso la admiro tanto.

Los huéspedes tal vez recuerden los cisnes sobre la cama.

Yo recuerdo a la mujer cuyas manos los hicieron posibles.

Al comenzar esta serie no se me ocurre una persona mejor para presentarles que Gladys. Ella representa a muchas mujeres trabajadoras cuyas contribuciones suelen pasar desapercibidas, aunque ayudan a sostener centros de trabajo, familias y comunidades enteras.

Este primer capítulo está dedicado a ella.
