Ain't Bees Thirsty?

People do crazy things somethings, right? I presume you've done a couple of crazy stuffs. Lol. Well, I did something crazy in the village during the holidays - filmed a swarm of bees!

So I saw the bees swarming the water tap at our front yard. Turns out they were there to drink water. Boy, was I surprised? You bet! Didn't know bees drank water too, lol!

Apparently, there was a hive nearby, a good reason for their visit at the tap. They'd come in the morning and stay till evening, and it was kinda challenging to get water there. Everyone was scared of their attack. Hehehe.

The thing is, even after the water stopped, they still stuck around, trying to get some behind the tap where the pipes connect. 😂

After watching them from afar, I got a bit brave and made a video and equally took some photos. Third time getting that close to bees, and I was reallyyyyy scared, lol!

Have you experienced this before, I'd love to know.

Yes, bees need water, especially on very hot days. I assume that it is warm where you are in Africa. Like all living creatures, they need water for their metabolism, but also to liquefy honey that has already been stored in a honeycomb, for example. There are specialised foragers who collect water, similar to those who collect nectar or propolis.

That's why beekeepers should always make sure that there are water sources near their hives, such as streams, ponds or lakes. If not, you can also set up a small bowl or plate with fresh water in an exposed spot and put a few pebbles in it as landing buoys.

Here is a link to German Post where I show and explain it.

Amazing. Now I understand why.
Yes, the weather is warm here and the tap was dropping water leaving a pool on the ground. That's what attracted them.

Thanks for this useful information. I was hoping you'd comment. 😂

Do have a pleasant weekend.
