I absolutely agree with you about not wasting leftovers!

putting together something quite edible out of relatively random leftover bits and pieces.

That, to me, is the real art of cooking! My Mom was an excellent cook, having to feed 5 children (the last one was a mistake - the best mistake ever, my parents said), but she always managed to make delicious meals from just about anything she could find in the kitchen and in the garden!
