Nuestra Señora de la Merced Church in the neighborhood of San Isidro [en/es]

A few days ago I ventured through the neighborhood of San Isidro in Old Havana. I love walking through these old streets, as they always bring us closer to our roots and culture. During my walk, I stopped at number 802 Cuba Street, corner Merced, where the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced is located, although everyone calls it Iglesia de la Merced. Just at that moment the baptisms had just finished for the day and its doors were wide open.

Hace unos días me aventuré por el barrio de San Isidro en La Habana Vieja. Me encanta caminar por estas viejas calles, ya que siempre nos acercan a nuestras raíces y cultura. Durante mi paseo, me detuve en el número 802 de la calle Cuba, esquina Merced, donde se encuentra la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, aunque todos la llaman Iglesia de la Merced. Justo en ese momento acababan de terminar los bautizos del día y sus puertas estaban abiertas de par en par.

From the outside, the church presents a fairly simple appearance, although it is evident that it has come a long way over time. Its style is quite sober and it has no tower. The main door, wide and open under a large arch that resembles a shell at the top, is protected by a small wall with a grille and a gate that limits access. At the top, in the center of the door, there is a beautiful statue of the Virgen de la Merced. According to my research, this church is almost 200 years old, although its construction lasted just over a century, which makes it a cultural and historical relic.

Desde el exterior, la iglesia presenta un aspecto bastante sencillo, aunque es evidente que ha recorrido un largo camino a lo largo del tiempo. Su estilo bastante sobrio y no tiene torre. La puerta principal, amplia y abierta bajo un gran arco que se asemeja a una concha en la parte superior, está protegida por un pequeño muro con una reja y una puerta que limita el acceso. En la parte superior, en el centro de la puerta, hay una hermosa estatua de la Virgen de la Merced. Según mis investigaciones, esta iglesia tiene casi 200 años, aunque su construcción duró poco más de un siglo, lo que la convierte en una reliquia cultural e histórica.

I took the opportunity and went inside. I was stunned by the interior beauty of the temple. I did not expect, seeing the severity of the exterior design, to find so many colors and splendor inside.

Upon entering the view instantly goes to a beautiful chandelier, very similar to the rest of the ones in the church, but this one ends up with a beautiful decoration that covers the entire ceiling of the entrance of the church with shades of sky blue, brown and yellow tones with a beautiful work that includes stars.

Aproveché la oportunidad y entré. Quedé anonadada con la belleza interior del templo. No esperaba, viendo la severidad del diseño exterior, encontrarme con tantos colores y esplendor en su interior.
Al entrar la vista instantáneamente se dirige a una hermosa lámpara, muy parecida al resto de las que hay iglesia, pero está termina arriba con un hermosa decoración que cubre todo el techo de la entrada de la iglesia con matices azul cielo, tonos marrones y amarillos con un hermoso trabajo que incluye estrellas.

The church has a main nave and two secondary aisles on each side, divided by highly decorated and colorful arches. The deep ornamentation is, undoubtedly, one of the most outstanding elements in the whole enclosure. The murals, the images on the vaults and the different works of art everywhere create an impressive artistic ensemble.

La iglesia cuenta con una nave principal y dos secundarias a cada lado, divididas por arcos muy decorados y llenos de colores. La profunda ornamentación es sin duda, uno de los elementos que más resaltan en todo el recinto. Los murales, las imágenes en las bóvedas y las diferentes obras de arte por doquier crean un conjunto artístico impresionante.

The main altar is as beautiful as the rest of the church, there are also other altars very well decorated, I really liked the one of the Virgin of Charity, where you can see the Cuban flag in the background. In the highest part of the roofs and windows, you can appreciate the stained glass windows, although the photos could not capture all its splendor. Just in front of the High Altar, there are two small balconies with a staircase to climb, which integrate perfectly with the decoration of the whole church.

El altar mayor es tan hermoso como el resto de la iglesia, también hay otros altares muy bien decorados, me gustó mucho el de la Virgen de la Caridad, donde se puede ver la bandera cubana al fondo. En la parte más alta de los techos y ventanas, se pueden apreciar los vitrales, aunque las fotos no pudieron captar todo su esplendor. Justo delante del Altar Mayor, hay dos pequeños balcones con una escalera para su subida, que se integran perfectamente con la decoración de toda la iglesia.

The ceilings are also beautifully decorated, and the confluence of all the endings of the arches gives it a shape that directs the view upwards, inviting you to admire every detail. This church is representative of Cuban culture and identity, as it has many parishioners. It is said to be one of the churches in Havana with the largest number of faithful, partly because many practitioners of the Yoruba religion, who worship Obatalá, according to the island's religious syncretism, associate him with the Virgin of Mercy. This makes the church a temple where religious syncretism is manifested, harmoniously coexisting the Yoruba and Catholic religions.

Los techos también están hermosamente decorados, y la confluencia de todas las terminaciones de los arcos le da una forma que dirige la vista hacia arriba, invitando a admirar cada detalle. Esta iglesia es representativa de la cultura y la identidad cubanas, ya que cuenta con muchos feligreses. Se dice que es una de las iglesias de La Habana con mayor cantidad de fieles, en parte porque muchos practicantes de la religión yoruba, que rinden culto a Obatalá, según el sincretismo religioso de la isla, lo asocian con la Virgen de las Mercedes. Esto convierte a la iglesia en un templo donde se manifiesta el sincretismo religioso, conviviendo armonicamente la religion yoruba y la católica.

It was a wonderful experience to enter this unique and beautiful church. From the outside, I would never have imagined the beauty it holds inside. I really appreciated its splendor and I feel fortunate to have visited it.

Fue una experiencia maravillosa entrar en esta singular y hermosa iglesia. Desde el exterior, nunca hubiera imaginado la belleza que alberga en su interior. Aprecié mucho su esplendor y me siento afortunada de haberla visitado.
