Light Situation: From Igando to Aso Rock

Living in Igando Lagos is one of the most challenging things when it comes to electricity. If you stay anywhere close to Oko filling bus stop, then you know what I am talking about. Light here is like a visitor that comes once in a while and disappears without notice. Sometimes they bring it two times a week, other times you will wait for two weeks or even more without seeing any sign

What makes it worse is that you cannot even tell if the light is faulty or not. You just keep guessing. At some point, you start asking yourself, is there a fault on the line or they just don’t want to give us light? Because the way it is, there is no difference between a fault and normal light in Igando. Both looks the same. You wake up and go to bed without light, nobody can explain what is wrong

When you are in Lagos, you realize how much people celebrate electricity like a big achievement. The moment the light comes, the whole street shouts like it’s a national holiday. Children will run out, some people even start rushing to iron their clothes or charge everything in the house before it goes off again. It is funny but sad at the same time because light should not be a luxury, but in Lagos it feels like it is

Right now, I am not in Igando. I came to Somorin Abeokuta for business and honestly, the difference is clear. There is a place here they call Aso Rock, and when I heard the name, I just laugh because I thought it was just an ordinary name. But staying here, I understand why they call it that. The light here is like what you see in government house. We use electricity without fear that it will go off any minute. You can cook, iron, watch TV, and still sleep with fan on without thinking of when they will take it

The funniest thing is that here, nobody even shouts up nepa' when the light comes because it is almost always there. Unlike in Lagos where we celebrate like Christmas anytime they bring light. This experience just makes me realize that the problem is not the whole Nigeria, it’s some areas that suffer more. Lagos is supposed to be the center of everything, but here we are begging for what other states enjoy easily

I just wish things can change one day. Because honestly, electricity is not supposed to be this hard. People pay for light and still live in darkness, yet no one is held responsible. Until then, we will keep celebrating up nepa in Lagos like we just won a jackpot
