KAUNAS , A WEEKEND STOP BETWEEN ROUTES

My routes often take me across almost all of Europe — from the Atlantic coast to the Baltic Sea, from the French vineyards to the eastern edges of the continent. The east is a direction I don’t visit often, usually just passing through without time for sightseeing. But this time, fate decided otherwise. 😉

During one of my routes, I got a rare weekend break in KAUNAS, LITHUANIA — and I couldn’t miss the opportunity to explore it properly. What you see in these photos is just a small glimpse of what I discovered during that day.

The city greeted me with calm streets, warm tones of red rooftops, and the soothing sound of the NEMAN RIVER. From the bridges, the view opens up to KAUNAS’ charming skyline — ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CHURCH, the twin towers of ST. PETER AND PAUL CATHEDRAL, and the old VYTAUTAS THE GREAT CHURCH that stands proudly by the riverbank. The orange roofs against the blue sky made the whole city look like a painting. 🎨

What fascinated me most was how KAUNAS blends history with serenity. Between 1919 and 1940, it served as THE TEMPORARY CAPITAL OF LITHUANIA, after VILNIUS was annexed by Poland. The city still carries traces of that era in its architecture — especially the INTERWAR MODERNISM, which is now on the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE TENTATIVE LIST.

KAUNAS lies at the meeting point of two rivers — NEMAN and NERIS — and that confluence gives it a special rhythm. The water divides the city but also connects it, reflecting towers, bridges, and clouds like a living postcard. 🌉

If you look closely at my photos, you’ll spot:

the CARMELITE CHURCH OF ST. CROSS (VYTAUTAS THE GREAT) — one of the oldest Gothic churches in LITHUANIA,

the CHURCH OF ST. FRANCIS XAVIER with its beautiful baroque towers,

and the city’s symbol – the word “LIETUVA” (LITHUANIA) written in yellow flowers on the river embankment 🌼.

It was one of those weekends where the road slowed down just enough to let me breathe, walk, and look around. I’ll definitely come back with more Lithuanian impressions soon — KAUNAS deserves a few more chapters in my travel story. 💛
