Germans last fought against Germans in 1866, during the so-called Austro-Prussian War. But at that time, the entire German Confederation was allied with Austria against Prussia. In the decisive Battle of Sadowa, the Austrians and Saxons faced off against the Prussians. Due to the incompetence of the Austrian high command, 50,000 Bavarian soldiers—also allies of Austria—were idling in Prague at the time.
