Visiting Lassithi: Crete’s Timeless Land of Windmills, History, and Fertility
A few days ago, we decided to go for a short field trip.
We needed to help a friend out with something and his house is in Lassithi area.
(note: his house is so impressive, filled with old things that belongs to his family .. I think it would be an amazing museum and maybe he will allow me to make a reportage in the future.)
The first village that we visited is called Pinakiano.
Situated at the northern entrance of the Lasithi Plateau, Pinakiano sits at roughly 840–850 meters above sea level.

The village is first mentioned around 1834 in an Egyptian census, together with the nearby village Lagou, listing some 20 Christian families

I wish I had more time to explore this lovely and small village.
This was one of my favorite photos, it appears as if smoke comes out of this - thus it is clouds of course!

Lasithi is the easternmost regional unit on Crete, with its capital in Agios Nikolaos. The areas western boundary are the Dikti mountains
Nestled within Lasithi lies the Lasithi Plateau, a high-altitude plain covering around 25 km².

After doing a short trip to Tzermiado Village, where we only had lunch but did not have the opportunity to take images, we visited a cross road where the visitor can find places to sit and have a coffee, eat something, and admire a beautiful spot created by windmills.gr!
As the day went by, the white clouds started becoming darker and the temperature decreased significally.

Some sprinkles of history.
This fertile plateau has been settled since the Neolithic era—around 6000 BC, by Minoans and later Dorians.
During Venetian rule, the plateau’s terrain and rebellious inhabitants led to a ban on settlement in the late 13th century
The plateau’s rich alluvial soil, nourished annually by melting snow, established it as one of Crete’s most fertile regions, enabling continuous agriculture throughout history.

There are really nice spots to visit and photograph, so I recommend that you do visit this place on your way to or on your way out of Lassithi region!

The buildings of the old houses are different in design. They are old but look much more beautiful. If the weather is good, the day passes quite well.
