My First Social Media Experience: The Excitement of Joining Facebook.

I can definitely remember the first time I joined social media, and honestly, it was a big deal for me at the time. Back then, Facebook was all the hype in my secondary school. Everyone was always talking about it. How they were adding new friends, liking posts, and chatting with people. Some of my classmates would even argue about who had the most friends and how they normally chat on Facebook during the holidays. At that time, it felt like if you weren’t on Facebook, you were missing out on something very vital. So, of course, I wanted to be part of it too.

At first, I didn’t have my own phone, but that didn’t stop me. I was so eager to get on Facebook that I decided to create an account using my mum’s phone. It was one of those small button phones, so the experience wasn’t the best, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to be on Facebook.I remember setting up my account, choosing a password, and trying to upload a profile picture. The internet was really slow, and using Facebook on that phone wasn’t as smooth as what my friends described, but at least I was in.

The real fun started when I finally got my own phone—a Tecno phone. That was when I fully immersed myself in the Facebook world. The first thing I did after setting up my account properly was to start adding people like crazy. I would send friend requests to anyone that popped up in the "People You May Know" section. I didn’t even really care if I actually knew them or not—I just wanted my friend list to grow.

I also remember being fascinated by the like button. I would go through my newsfeed and just like random posts, even if I didn’t fully understand them. And of course, I had to make my first post, which was something simple like “Hi, everyone.” Looking back, it was kind of cringeworthy, but at that moment, I felt like I had officially arrived.

One of the funniest things about my early Facebook experience was how I used to think that getting likes was the ultimate goal. I would post random things and then keep refreshing the page to see if anyone had liked them. If I got a few likes, I would be over the moon. If nobody liked my post, I would be heartbroken

The excitement of joining Facebook was unreal. It felt like I had unlocked a whole new world where I could connect with people, see what was trending, and even chat with friends after school. Looking back now, it’s funny how something as simple as creating a Facebook account felt like such a huge achievement. But at that time, it really was.

Thanks for reading.
