Who's to Blame? Unpacking the Ethics of Invention and Misuse
> Estimated reading time: 2-3 minutes
Listening to Akon's "Put the blame on me" hit when I was writing this post. πΉ

I think one thing that should be clear and what people should try to embrace more in life is 'Change'. There would always be change and advancement especially when it comes to technology and innovation. From drugs to weapons and even digital tools, inventions that could make life much easier have ended up being abused by people, sometimes leading to disaster.
This post is a response to hive learners prompt of the week: TAKE THE BLAME. It talks about ethical implications of technological advancement and personal responsibility of creators in society. Should the Inventors really be blamed for the misuse of its users?

The Dual Nature of Invention: From Purpose to Peril

I remember when I was in junior high school and my teacher was giving a gist on technological advancement and talked about how guns were created for military application, specifically as a new form of range attack to the enemy. The idea of the invention was to provide an advantage in battle. It was basically used to protect women, children and the nation. In the beginning, it was controlled and limited to trained military personnel. But now, everyone and anyone can own guns and they are often used to kill innocent people and also intimidate other people. This raises an important question: should the inventors of such tools be blamed for how they are used today?

Inventors vs Users

In my opinion, inventors should not carry the full blame for how their inventions are later abused. Most inventors create stuff with a purpose in mind, usually to solve a problem or improve the way of life in some way. The person who created a knife, for example, designed it to cut food and slice other food items, not to stab another human being or to be used by kids for sword play. The same applies to medicines, which are meant to heal ailments, but can be abused as drugs. The person that decides to misuse the medication should take responsibility and not the person that invented it.

The Creator's Role: Mitigating Potential Harm
We definitely aren't letting Inventors off the hook though. Inventors are not completely free from responsibility. They should always think about the potential negative uses of their creations and try to include safety measures in their products. For example, manufacturers of cars include seatbelts and airbags to reduce harm from accident or collision impact.
Developers of digital platforms try to create rules and filters to prevent abuse. Hive Learners for instance has community rules and even moderators to prevent abuse of the platform. While they cannot control every outcome, they can reduce the chances of misuse.

Its a Matter of Choice
In most cases, the real blame should fall on bad eggs - the people who knowingly use tools for destructive purposes. Technology itself is neutral. Technology is life, its growth. It does not choose good or evil; humans do. A gun does not decide to shoot someone. A drug does not decide to be abused. A person consciously makes that choice.
The society needs to educate people more and also instill law and moral discipline. When people aren't taught responsibility, even good inventions can be creatively used to commit atrocities.

Conclusion: Shared Blame
In conclusion, inventors should not be blamed entirely when their inventions are used for evil, but they should still act responsibly when creating them. Guides/Manuals should be included in the invention and products should have the adverse effects boldly written in the packaging. The greater blame lies with those who misuse these inventions and with systems that allow abuse to go unchecked.
