What Is God's Will?

avatar

This is something I have struggled with for years...

And I'm going to 'try' to explain and discuss it without getting too theologically deep....

Try is the key word there :)

We know from the bible that we are to live by God's will. Jesus even shows this in the Lord's Prayer when he states:

"Thy will be done!"

God's will. Seems simple enough but....Quick question....

What exactly is God's will?

Let's say you want a brand new car. Or a new home. Maybe a better paying job. And you get on your knees and pray. Are you sure that your request is God's will?

Even more personal, what about health issues....You are sick and pray for God to heal you. This is tricky because we know God wants us in good health, but what if your healing or the healing of others isn't part of God's will?

That's a theological debate for another time. Personally without getting too deep into that, I believe this world is fallen and so is such, disease and pain run rampant. That was never God's plan or don't in line with His will. This is the playground of the devil, so I don't point the finger and blame God for pain and suffering.

But back to His will....Here's how I try to live by His will.

Nose deep. In scripture.

You see, everything God wants us to become, wants us to live by and grow as believers is found in the pages of scripture. Every single bit of it.

So if you are looking for how to be the 'perfect little Christian', there isn't some secret formula. It's literally by prayerfully studying the bible.

Use Christ as our example as well. See how He treated others, how He healed the sick, how He lead his disciples. Follow His example.

What was His relationship with the Father like? Imitate it!

Here's my crazy thoughts on how Christ was able to live the perfect life. We only know bits and pieces about His childhood, but there is scripture where He is in the temple at a young age, learning and teaching the scribes.

And when He met the 2 disciples on the road after His death, He gave them the most in depth bible study in history.

He answered the devil in the wilderness with 'It is written' at every turn which shows us His deep knowledge of His book.

So there's more evidence of how we live God's will.....Spending our free time and as much time as we can...In scripture. That's the beauty of the bible, the more time you spend in it, the more it lights your path.

It's God's way of communicating with His people in today's day and age, so instead of watching the latest video on YouTube or Tiktok, let's open up our bibles and start to have a depper and more meaningful relationship with our Creator!

Studying the Bible is of great benefit. And, to increase our interest in studying the Bible, we may have to do it in association with others sometimes.

It's difficult to discern God's will. The Catholic Church teaches followers about vocation to help give some direction. Discernment of your vocation is an important effort that should include prayer, guidance, and exploration. This is just to share, not to imply anything.

The first vocation is a universal call to holiness, where every baptized person is invited to follow Christ and grow in love for God and neighbor. More simply put, we are called to try to be saints.

The second vocation will be to choose marriage, priesthood, religious life, consecrated single life, or just being single. This vocation seems either by default or choice. However, we are expected to put some thought into it. For example, if you're going to be married, then you have to also spiritually commit to the marriage and the raising of your children to align with the teachings of Christ. A more conscious spiritual effort comes into play. If you are to remain single, what kind of single person would Christ expect?

The third vocation is what you're going to do for a living. It can align with your personal purpose or mission. For example, if you want to care for others you can be a medical worker or missionary. Obviously you want your job to align with your values and sense of purpose. If you're more of a protector, you can join the police. Again, we're supposed to do our jobs according to Christ's teachings.

Beyond that, you kind of already have your hands full with your primary vocations. The overarching theme is that by carrying out His individual purpose for each of us with holiness and service to others we are fulfilling His will. Just to reiterate, discernment is tough for most people, which is why they recommend prayer, guidance, and exploration.

In my personal experience, it can be easy to fall into the sense that one is destined for more, that we aren't doing enough. But that seems to me like an ego thing. I have to remind myself that if I'm washing dishes or working my job, I'm being a good steward and doing it in service to others. These aren't small things when you are consciously doing them with love and purpose. I have come to accept that God's will often presents itself to me, if I am open and free to respond to His call. When I have failed (often) to live up to His will, He has always been there with new opportunities to try again.

I suspect that maybe I went off on a tangent. But when thinking about His will, this is what comes to mind.

God's will is that I work harder to get what I want.

The more we read the Bible, we should also act out what the Bible says
That’s the most important because it makes us get used to what the Bible asks us to do

If we don’t want to open our Bibles, our social media handle should be filled with the word of God always
If I ever open my social network, it will surely have to do with something I can learn from or Bible scriptures

My head is being flooded with scriptures supporting your conclusion - that God is jealous of our time. We are quick to devote hours to all sorts of vanity, but just spending 20 minutes a day exclusively with the Creator of the Universe? Seems like a small ask, until we try it. Studying the WORD and imitating the KING and walking as He walked. It's the ultimate starting (and continuing) point of determining God's will for our lives.
