15 July 2026,daily writing prompt:Short story "The Last Letter of Twilight"

Today I have come with a story. Let's start with Ayan and Mehuli's first meeting under the cloudy sky on an afternoon in Shrawan. Mehuli was standing on the bank of the river crying, before she knew the source of that pain, Ayan stood next to her and said, "When love is lost, tears come, but when someone is by her side, it can be tolerated." Their story began with that. Ayan was the son of an ordinary cobbler's family, a man in a world of poverty, but his heart was like clear glass. Mehuli was the granddaughter of a landlord, who had come from the city to study in the village, to her grandfather. The lives of the two were on two poles, society and class. Yet when love comes, it does not accept division.

They used to weave dreams sitting in the shade of palm trees on the bank of the river along the village path. Mehuli would say, “If I had stayed here forever?” Ayan would say with a smile, “If only you were here, my world would be complete. But society is so cruel. One day, the village headman saw them. The news spread, and a storm started in the landlord’s house. Mehuli’s marriage was fixed with a high-ranking government official. Mehuli protested, cried, and went on a hunger strike, but no one listened to her heart.

The night before the wedding, she ran away to Ayan. “Come on, let’s go somewhere,” Mehuli said. But Ayan knew that if she went with him, Mehuli’s life would be ruined. He himself retreated. “I’m letting you go, not for you, but for your future,” he said. Mehuli became speechless. Ayan hugged her for the last time, kissed her on the forehead, and said, “Be well. I will wait for you, as long as I live.”

On the morning of the wedding day, Ayan's body was found on the river bank. He was holding a torn, wet and bloodstained letter. The letter read: "May you be happy, this is my love. My love is not for survival, but for proof. You should know that someone once loved you selflessly."

Mehuli left the wedding ceremony that day and went to the river bank. She sat next to Ayan until the sun set. Then no one saw her again. Some say she jumped into the river. Some say she went to the Himalayas. But the elders of the village still say that at dusk, a shadow can be seen on the river bank. A boy and a girl sit holding hands. Time cannot touch them.
