I ran across this recently on web2. When challenging the sacred cows of public policy for the left or the right, presenting evidence contrary to their position, even when from sources they claim to otherwise revere, leads to dismissal at best, and abuse more often.

Sad, but true.
Sometime last year I watched an interesting YouTube clip with a political blogger talking to a psychologist, exploring the (disturbing) reality that current politics is more like so-called pro wrestling than about government.
People will steadfastly back their ideal/champion, even if they are supporting something to their own detriment. They are not actually voters, they are fans.
Which — taken to its extreme — leads to what you're suggesting, and even worse. Meanwhile, it's near to impossible for someone who actually wants to create positive civic change to gain much traction.
I am convinced democracy is the bandwagon and false choice fallacies masquerading as public participation in statecraft. What works well for voluntary decision-making swiftly collapses even at the scale of an HOA with the power to levy liens, to say nothing of state and federal governments taxing and imprisoning.
Such citicism of the status quo invariably results in being accused of advocating for monarchy or dictatorship. Yet they are the ones arguing, "We can't trust people to be free." And people too foolish to govern themselves somehow miraculously become wise enough to choose someone to govern their neighbors on election day? Or if people cannot go earn themselves, how do some have the wisdom to go earn all?
