If this actually happened in real life, it’d be a true-crime podcast instead of a romance. But McKendrick leans right into that absurdity to make it work. You’ve got Nick Robinson sitting in his apartment at 3 AM, completely stressed out over a stranger's baking disasters and corporate nightmares like it's prestige TV. Underneath all the laughs, though, it taps into that terrifying, universal fear of time slipping away and your brain slowly forgetting the exact sound of a loved one's voice. It shows how grief doesn't just vanish; it mutates into weird little habits and digital ghosts.
Ahora bien, hay que hablar del elefante en el cuarto: toda la trama exige que le perdonemos a los guionistas una licencia olímpica sobre cómo las telefónicas reciclan los números. Si esto pasara en la vida real, terminaría en un pódcast de crímenes en vez de en una historia de amor. Pero la película se apoya en ese disparate y lo hace funcionar. Ver a Nick Robinson a las 3 de la mañana en su casa, súper tenso por los desastres de repostería y los rollos de oficina de una desconocida como si estuviera viendo una serie de estreno, tiene su gracia. Y por debajo de las risas, te toca esa fibra delicada y de miedo real al ver cómo pasa el tiempo y te da terror ir perdiendo el tono exacto de la voz de alguien que se fue. It’s chaotic and stretches logic to its absolute breaking point, but it has a real beating heart, incredible acting, and a sharp, mature sense of humor. Quick heads-up, though: this definitely isn’t a family movie night pick or suitable for kids. It deals heavily with grief, adult burnout, and office meltdowns, making it much better suited for a solo watch or a night in with friends.
