The need to learn to communicate in writing is more urgent than ever. I think about it every day because I realize I spend more time writing than speaking.

My important conversations happen via email, work coordination via WhatsApp, and I share my ideas on blogs. The written word has become my primary tool.

However, I see a dangerous irony: the more we write, the worse we get. We neglect grammar, punctuation, and spelling. We type in a hurry, assuming that the person on the other end will "understand us." And maybe sometimes we get it right, but the margin for error is enormous. Every omitted accent or misplaced comma can change the meaning of a message.

In addition, our vocabulary becomes impoverished. We write less and use fewer words. We replace entire sentences with abbreviations or emojis.

While they're useful for expressing quick emotions, they're a poor substitute for text. We can't communicate a complex idea with an icon. This is making us mentally lazy.

The biggest risk, however, is ambiguity. When I speak, my tone of voice, my gestures, and my timing make it clear whether I'm joking, being ironic, or serious.

In plain text, that's lost. Constructive criticism can be read as an attack. A joke can be interpreted as an offense. Without nonverbal cues, the burden of clarity falls entirely on the writer.

That's why, now more than ever, it's vital to know how to write correctly. It's not about being pedantic, but about being effective. About making sure that what I say is exactly what I mean. About ensuring that my ideas arrive intact, without misunderstandings that damage a relationship, ruin a business, or offend a friend. Writing well is no longer a luxury for writers; it's a social and professional survival skill.

La necesidad de aprender a comunicarnos por escrito es hoy más urgente que nunca. Lo pienso cada día, porque me doy cuenta de que paso más horas escribiendo que hablando.
Mis conversaciones importantes suceden por email, las coordinaciones del trabajo por WhatsApp y mis ideas las comparto en blogs. La palabra escrita se ha convertido en mi herramienta principal.

Sin embargo, veo una ironía peligrosa: mientras más escribimos, peor lo hacemos. Descuidamos la gramática, la puntuación y la ortografía. Escribimos con prisas, asumiendo que quien está al otro lado "nos entenderá". Y tal vez a veces acierte, pero el margen para el error es enorme. Cada tilde omitida o coma mal puesta puede cambiar el sentido de un mensaje.

Además, nuestro vocabulario se empobrece. Escribimos menos y utilizamos menos palabras. Sustituimos frases completas por abreviaturas o emojis.

Si bien son útiles para expresar emociones rápidas, son un sustituto pobre para el texto. No podemos comunicar una idea compleja con un icono. Esto nos está haciendo perezosos mentales.

El mayor riesgo, sin embargo, es la ambigüedad. Cuando hablo, mi tono de voz, mis gestos y mi ritmo aclaran si estoy bromeando, siendo irónico o serio.

En un texto plano, eso se pierde. Una crítica constructiva puede leerse como un ataque. Un chiste puede interpretarse como una ofensa. Sin las señales no verbales, la carga de la claridad recae completamente en la escritura.

Por eso, ahora más que nunca, es una necesidad vital saber escribir correctamente. No se trata de ser pedante, sino de ser efectivo. De cerciorarme de que lo que digo es exactamente lo que quiero decir.

De asegurarme de que mis ideas llegan intactas, sin malentendidos que dañen una relación, arruinen un negocio o ofendan a un amigo. Escribir bien ya no es un lujo para escritores; es una habilidad de supervivencia social y profesional.
