I've heard from friends that their most unforgettable experience while serving national service was to dig a trench. Some labelled it as something that is physically super strenuous while some called it digging their own grave. Whenever during lunch and the men started talking about the days when they underwent national service, this activity somehow tend to be the talk of the town. Everyone just wanted to chip in and share what they went through.

I guess national service is really a part of the growing years of a boy maturing into a man in my country. There seem to be so many memories and sometimes I do see the difference between them and some whom might come from other nations that did not have such a requirement. The maturity in thinking and the mental resilience is at a totally different scale between them. Perhaps while it does look very physically demanding, this is what define the men of my country whom are ready to be mobilised should the country need them.
