Building a Sustainable Prize Economy for The Fallen Mages

Hi Mages,
Competitive games become even more exciting when skill, strategy, and teamwork can lead to meaningful rewards. With The Fallen Mages, our goal is to create a prize system that does not depend on short term hype. Instead, we want to build a transparent and sustainable treasury that can support tournaments for many years.

Starting With a Dedicated Treasury

At the beginning of the project, I plan to create a dedicated prize treasury and provide its initial capital personally. This creates a solid foundation before the game generates significant revenue of its own.

Once The Fallen Mages begins earning revenue, between 30 and 50 percent of selected income streams will flow directly into this treasury. The exact percentage may vary depending on the source of revenue, operating costs, and the continued development needs of the game.

This means that part of the success of The Fallen Mages will always return to its community.

Turning Capital Into Recurring Prize Money

The treasury will hold HBD and other carefully selected stablecoins. Instead of spending the original capital immediately, the goal is to use the returns generated by these holdings to finance tournament prizes.

This creates a simple long term principle:

The treasury provides capital.

The capital generates returns.

The returns fund tournament prizes.

New revenue increases the treasury.

A larger treasury can generate higher future rewards.

In the best case, this system could allow tournament prizes to grow from month to month without consuming the foundation that supports them.

Naturally, capital preservation, diversification, security, and responsible risk management will be essential. No return is guaranteed, even when stablecoins are involved. For this reason, the treasury should use transparent rules, avoid unnecessary risk, and maintain sufficient reserves.

Rewards for More Than Just the Champion

Tournament prizes will be distributed across several finishing positions, with the highest placements receiving a larger share.

The champion should earn an exceptional reward because reaching first place requires outstanding skill and consistency. At the same time, the remaining prize positions should still feel worthwhile. Players who perform well should leave a tournament feeling that their time, preparation, and achievement were respected.

Depending on the size of a tournament, the prize structure could reward a broad range of participants. Special rewards could also recognize achievements such as the best defensive performance, the strongest comeback, the most creative strategy, or the most valuable team player.

Some rewards could be paid directly from the prize pool, while others could take the form of cosmetic items, exclusive titles, profile decorations, or qualification points for larger seasonal events.

Guilds Can Share the Success

Players will also be able to compete as guilds.

If a guild reaches a prize position, part of its reward could be shared with participating guild members. This would allow players to benefit even when their individual placement would not normally qualify them for a direct payout.

A guild system could reward more than the final lineup. Scouts, coaches, strategy planners, training partners, and substitute players may all contribute to a successful tournament run. Guild based rewards can recognize this wider team effort and encourage players to build lasting communities.

Clear distribution rules will be important. Each guild should understand in advance how rewards are divided, which members qualify, and whether the guild itself may retain a small portion for future events or community activities.

Full Transparency on the Homepage

Trust is essential for a community funded prize economy. That is why we are considering displaying the treasury directly on the The Fallen Mages homepage.

Players could always see:

The current value of the treasury

The assets held by the treasury

The percentage allocated to each asset

Recent contributions from game revenue

Returns generated for tournament rewards

The estimated prize pool for the next tournament

The date of the next scheduled distribution

A public treasury dashboard could turn the growth of the prize system into part of the experience. Players would be able to watch the prize pool develop and understand how their participation supports future competitions.

We could also show milestones. For example, when the treasury reaches a certain value, the next tournament might unlock an additional prize position, a larger guild reward, or a special community event.

Growing Together With the Community

The most exciting part of this model is that players would not simply compete for rewards. They would help build an ecosystem in which future tournaments can become larger and more rewarding.

As the game grows, the treasury could support monthly competitions, seasonal championships, guild leagues, beginner tournaments, community events, and eventually a major annual final.

The treasury could also maintain a reserve so that prize money remains stable during weaker months. This would make the system more predictable and prevent every short term market movement from affecting the next tournament.

Community votes or advisory polls could help decide how a portion of the generated returns is used. Players might choose between increasing the next championship pool, funding more frequent smaller tournaments, expanding guild rewards, or supporting special formats.

What Do You Think?

Would a visible and steadily growing treasury make The Fallen Mages more attractive to you?

Do you like the idea of showing the current treasury value and the estimated upcoming prize pools directly on the homepage? Would that transparency encourage new players to join, or would you present the information differently?

How should prizes be distributed between champions, other ranked players, and successful guilds? Should the treasury focus on a few major tournaments or support many smaller events throughout the year?

We would love to hear your ideas, concerns, and feedback. This system should not only reward the strongest players. It should grow together with the entire The Fallen Mages community.

Yes, a transparent treasury is a great idea, and a dashboard to show some metrics as well (but not more than one number on the homepage, the rest could be some clicks away, only for users really that interested).
At least in my chess tournaments I give of course more to the top3 but at least some reward to all players, when they have participated a minimum number of rounds, to compensate for their dedication. Motivation-wise it is better to e.g. not give prices to only the top5. But it depends of course on the conditions, how much there is to distribute and how many players.
I would go for regular small tournaments, especially if the game is not that known.
