Who Moves First

I heard the shout before I saw what happened.

Someone had fallen on the road a few meters ahead of me. A small crowd began to gather, but no one moved immediately. People were watching, trying to understand what had happened.

I slowed down too.

For a moment, I did the same thing everyone else was doing — observing from a distance. I told myself someone closer would help. Someone older. Someone more qualified.

But seconds passed, and the person was still on the ground.

That’s when I realized something uncomfortable. Everyone was waiting for someone else to act.

So I stepped forward.

I helped the person sit up and asked if they were okay. Another person joined in. Then another. Within moments, the hesitation disappeared, and people started helping properly.

Later, as I walked away, I kept thinking about those first few seconds. Not because the situation was serious, but because of how easy it is to assume someone else will take responsibility.

That moment reminded me of something simple. Sometimes the difference between a crowd watching and a crowd helping is just one person deciding to move first.
