Choosing to Speak Up
I stared at my phone longer than I should have.
The message was already typed. All I had to do was press send.
It was a follow-up to a job interview I had attended the week before. They said they’d get back to me, but days had passed. No reply. No update. Just silence. I kept rereading the message, wondering if it sounded desperate or unnecessary.
What if they think I’m annoying?
What if I ruin my chances instead of helping them?
I told myself to wait one more day. Then another. Waiting felt safe. Doing nothing always does.
But deep down, I knew I was just avoiding the discomfort. I had prepared well for the interview. I answered their questions honestly. I left feeling hopeful. Still, fear made me doubt myself afterward.
My phone buzzed with notifications from other apps, but not the one I cared about. I thought about how many times I stayed quiet in moments like this—times I didn’t ask questions, didn’t follow up, didn’t speak up—then later wondered what could have happened if I had.
I read the message one last time. It was polite. Clear. Simple. Nothing extra.
So I sent it.
Almost immediately, my heart started racing. I placed the phone face down and tried to distract myself. Minutes felt longer than they should have. I kept imagining worst-case reactions, even though I had no proof any of them would happen.
Later that evening, I checked my phone again.
There was a reply.
They thanked me for reaching out. They said my interview had gone well and they were still reviewing candidates. Then they added something unexpected—they appreciated my initiative and would be in touch soon.
I didn’t get an instant offer. Nothing dramatic happened. But the silence was gone. The doubt eased. I felt lighter, knowing I didn’t let fear make the decision for me.
That moment reminded me of something important. Many opportunities don’t disappear because we’re incapable—they disappear because we stay quiet. Fear often disguises itself as patience, but sometimes it’s just hesitation.
Since then, I’ve learned this: speaking up won’t always change the outcome, but staying silent almost guarantees it won’t.
