The Crochet Obsession - Night & Day Hanging Ornament (DIY)

Greetings Hive Friends!

Another little gift, made with love and yarn. Sometimes, scraps of sanity can only be found between the counts of stitches.

This little hanging ornament was inspired by by beautiful muse, and a dream. I think it is rather pretty and would love to attempt to create more things like this.

What you need to create this:
  • Black yarn & 2.5 crochet hook

  • Yellow yarn and 3.75 crochet hook

  • Thin chain (35cm)

  • Needle for sewing pieces together

  • Scissors

First, I made a quick sketch of the idea on a scrap of paper.

All parts were made from basic crochet appliques, you can use your own or refer to the pattern I used. (I am slowly learning how to just create my own, but for now, these are very helpful)

Next we create our beautiful crescent moon, I found it quite fun to make.

Next is our big happy sun.

I loved making these stars, they are so easy and fun, I am also quite fond of starts and already starting to plan a project that'll use loads of stars.

Assembling the Ornament

Craft shops or jewelry making suppliers should sell assorted lengths of chain in all shapes and sizes, but I tend to use what I have. A simple crochet chain or thin ribbon could also work, but I think this gives it a better finish.

All the bits and pieces, ready to assemble. You should have:

  • 1 Bat

  • 2 Moons

  • 4 Stars

  • 2 Suns

  • 1 Cat

  • Chain

For both these pieces, sew the cat to the sun and the bat to the moon. Sew onto only one piece, leaving the second sun and moon for attaching to the chain.

I forgot to take photos of this step. From the top of the chain, sew together the moon pieces, one on either side of the chain, sandwiching it in between pieces, do the same for the rest of pieces, according to the planned design.

Now, this is only one idea, using pretty much any and all appliques and a length of chain/ribbon/whatever you can create infinite designs. I enjoyed this project a lot. Let me know if anyone else tries this, I would love to see your creations.

Well that's it for now. Till next time!

Very similar but knitting takes way more skill and patience. Very cool though, perfect for this overly cold winter.

I never got into crochet but I always thought it was far more difficult than knitting? I love your creations though! Funny how this cold weather has us all knitting up a storm 😜
