The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 14, Post #5

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 14:19-22

The people of Israel were panicking last week as the army and chariots of Far'oh (Pharaoh) had arrived and were about to attack. Today we have a non-confrontation, since the army cannot get near the Almighty's people.

The reading starts out with the male-Ach elo-Heem (Angel of God) moving from being in front of Israel, I guess that means he was at the water because he had been leading them as a pillar - and he moved to a position behind them (between them and the Egyptians).

The Hebrew says that "he was" a pillar of cloud in the darkness, vee-Yah-er et ha-Lay'lah (and he gave light to the night). Then, Moshe (Moses) stretched his hand out over the sea, and YHVH drove a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land. The waters were divided.

Then this reading clearly says that the people of Israel walked into the sea va-ya-bah-Shah (on the dry land). And the waters, to them, were a wall on the right and on the left of them.

That is our reading for today. We have had a lot of instructions and dialogues that we have read that are necessary to the story but not as exciting as this one. Then we get a burst of information and action packed into a few verses.

I have a feeling the next few posts will be action packed as well.

Today's reading

English

Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night
without one coming near the other all night.

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and YHVH drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
