Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 14:5-9

Last week, we saw the people leaving Mitsraim (Egypt) and God instructs them where to camp, leaving them between a rock and a wet place. Today our story looks at what Pharaoh is thinking and all of what he is doing.

The passages starts with Far'oh (Pharaoh) being told that the people have fled the land of Mitsraim. So, Far'oh changes his mind and asks himself, "What is this that we have done, having let go the people of Israel from serving us?" Note that there is still no mention in the book of Exodus that translates to "slave".

As another side note: Why did Far'oh need to be told about this event. I mean, the people having left, the king had ordered it due to the heavy hand of the Almighty hitting him so hard with all those plagues.

So Far'oh harnesses reech'Boe (his chariot) and six hundred Rechev baChur (chariot chosen) and every Rechev of Mitsraim. Then YHVH made the heart of Far'oh strong and they pursued Israel and overtook them who were encamping at Pi-hahiroth (mouth of the gorges).

Next week, we will hear how the people reacted to the arrival of their old bosses.

Today's reading

English

When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the mind of Pharaoh and his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, "What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?" So he made ready his chariot and took his army with him, and took six hundred chosen chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. And YHVH hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the people of Israel while the people of Israel were going out defiantly. The Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them encamped at the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.
