The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 12, Post #3
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 12:12-15
We saw the Creator's instructions last week, related to the Pesach (passover) lambs and where to put the blood in order to survive the next (and last) plague. Today, we are seeing a description of that plague as well as the next instructions for the newly created Moed (appointed time). We know these as "Jewish Holidays" but they mean a lot more than just a day to take off work.
El Shadai (the Almighty) continues today with the "why" for the blood on the doors. He tells them about how he will pass through Mitsraim (Egypt) this night strike down every 'first born' of everyone in the land. I want to pause here to state that he includes the words man, beast, oo-v'chole elohey mistrayeem (and all of the gods of Egypt) stating that he will 'do judgement' on them, and he repeats that he is YHVH. Likely for contrast, he compares His actions to the inaction of rock and stone figures.
Going on, God says that he will see the blood on the door posts of homes and pasach'tee alaychem (I will pass over them), saying that the plague will not destroy anyone inside. He goes on to tell them that this action will become a lezeecar'ot (memorial), and you shall celebrate a feast about this day throughout all generations for eternity.
Stay with me here. We are only covering three verses, but there is a lot here.
Lastly, he tells them that they shall eat only unleavened bread for seven days. On the first day, you will remove all se'or (leaven, which is yeast) from your homes. If anyone eats food that has se'or in it, they shall be cut off from Israel.
Today's reading
English
"For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments; I am YHVH. The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt."
"This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to YHVH; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven out of your houses, for if anyone eats what is leavened, from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel."
