I agree with much of what you are saying, but your content is actually making the argument for the down-vote function.

I am close to seeing what a trending feed without (or even negatively weighted) votes from bad-faith accounts looks like. If this became a thing then the mass of people looking for genuine quality might counter the monetary effect of these accounts.

As you said, the tech is not the problem! 😀
