Microsoft: Shareholders Oppose Bitcoin Investment

Microsoft’s Vote

Microsoft’s shareholders, gathered before the board of directors, voted against the proposal to adopt Bitcoin as a reserve asset to diversify the company’s investments. The proposal was initiated by the National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), a think tank that had put forward the operation in favor of a more "profitable" diversification strategy.

However, despite Bitcoin being in the spotlight in recent weeks, it seems the hi-tech giant will take longer before directly approaching the leading cryptocurrency.

According to NCPPR, adopting BTC could have created billions of dollars in value, “eliminating all risks” for shareholders.

“Institutional and corporate adoption of Bitcoin is becoming increasingly common,” the shared proposal stated. “Microsoft’s second-largest shareholder, BlackRock, already offers its clients a Bitcoin ETF.”

The Postponed Appointment with BTC

Although BTC remains more volatile than assets like corporate bonds, ignoring it entirely could represent an equally significant risk. For this reason, the proposed allocation to Bitcoin was set at 1% to 5% of the company’s profits.

Microsoft’s board formally advised against accepting the proposal through a filing with the SEC, deeming it “unnecessary.” At the same time, they acknowledged the opportunities offered by the crypto world.

Clearly, the board chose not to be influenced by the FOMO surrounding the sector these days, nor by explicit comparisons to MicroStrategy’s approach. Under Michael Saylor’s leadership, MicroStrategy actively pushed for adopting BTC as a reserve asset.
