This month's edition made me think about uninterruptible power supplies and how I had never even seen one, let alone used one, until I moved to Thailand. I guess I was fortunate to live in places with reliable electricity grids because it wasn't something we so much as thought about. In Thailand though, and to a lessor degree Vietnam as well, these things are essential if using a desktop computer. I only use laptops anymore so it doesn't bother me a great deal but a long time ago I owned an internet cafe and had a dozen of those damn things at any given point in time. The batteries in them didn't last nearly as long as I would have liked them to, that is for sure.

I still use a desktop and run a server at home (mostly for hobby purposes) so I do have a UPS. I'm in Florida so it isn't uncommon for an afternoon thunderstorm to cause the power to blink. You're right about the batteries. If you are lucky, you'll get a couple of years out of them. At least they are replaceable.
