if and when the shutdown happens does that mean you don't have to / get to go to work? Sorry if you answered this already in your post but I am a scatterbrain.

Nah, it is okay. The shutdown seems to be averted for now. I would probably still have to go to work, but the district would have to scramble to find funds to pay everyone. Some districts have a fund balance to cover it, some don't. In the cases where they don't, I am not sure what would happen.
