The Flicker Haven Farm Files-Hibernotions

This morning, after spending a of couple hours studying the intricacies of the integumentary system, reviewing the multidimensional framework that encompasses sound social work practice, and spending more than a bit of time delving in to the world of executive functioning and how trauma upends its development in human beings, I realized that it might be a nice bit of a brain diversion to switch gears a bit before heading off to do some physical chores.

So I am writing a blog about what's up on the homestead.

With it being February we are just on the cusp of the beginning of seed starting season. I am pretty jazzed about getting to start some onions and flowers. The peppers will be right after that, and before I know it March will be here and it will be tomato time. Even though January was the month that felt like a year, things be a movin' along.

I'm also excited to try a little experimental greenhouse hack for the beginning of seed starting season. For years I hauled in my homemade seed starting shelf, but I repurposed that shelf out in the greenhouse and don't really want to dismantle that repurpose-ing. Plus, most of the plants will be moved out to the greenhouse in a few weeks anyway and I'll need that shelf in there. I just needed a temporary space for the onions and peppers, and an idea on one of my feeds provided me with the solution I need.

I have a new dresser being delivered today, so I will have a clear plastic shelving unit available. I am going to put my peppers and onions in that little beastie and set it in front of my sunny window. Yay innovative greenhouse. There's bonus points there too because the cats won't be able to get to my seedlings. I'll keep you apprised of how it's going.

I'm mainly doing this little experiment because I don't want to heat the greenhouse this month, as it's supposed to be more than a bit chilly for the next couple weeks especially. My house is already heated, so why not start the few plants in here. I mean, it seems logical. We shall see.

Yesterday, we celebrated my mom's birthday a couple days early so we could all get together. I made Ma some pretty festive cupcakes and we all just sat around and intermingled for a few hours, it was pretty pleasant, as most family interludes are.

Today, though, today I have real life to attend to and far less chatting. After I finish this little homestead-themed missive I have a shower to scrub, chickens to feed, business work to attend to, dinner to make at some point, more school work, and honestly, I need some rest as I am feeling a bit worn out.

I mean, look at Teelah-cat next to the fire. She's not ignoring the fact that it's hibernation season. I kinda want to emulate her very delightful example. Curled up next to the fire with a blanket, corg in my lap, and a cozy mystery sounds pretty tempting.

Okay, I am going to go get my chores done, winter isn't going to last forever after all.

And as most of the time, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's as of yet not coated in compost iPhone. The text divider image was made in Canva.

Awww, I was hoping to see the new set -up... Of course the cat has the best place in the house, next to the wood stove. :))

Cats sure can make themselves comfortable in odd places. That's a warm spot, I'm sure, but it doesn't look as cushy as a cat usually wants.
