Saying something: Part Seventeen - Responsibility

SSumpinn335 (2).JPG

I had an idea a while back to do a little series of posts about things I've learned and applied to my personal and professional life. I'll keep these posts quite short but hope someone reads something they can fit into their own life of they can use to good effect.

Three words I value greatly are ownership, responsibility and discipline and this is the second in a three-part set of posts on each of these concepts, you can see the first part here if you would like to.

Responsibility

Human beings have so many responsibilities: Taking out the garbage, going to work, obeying the speed limit when driving, paying taxes...you get the idea. Those things and others like them are important, no doubt, but responsibility extends further.

I believe responsibility starts with the individual themselves, that a person has a responsibility to be the right person for themselves and then others and only through a strong sense of responsibility can a person be their best self, design and create their best life and have that spread outwardly like ripples on a pond after a stone is thrown in.

The phrase, I am responsible is something everyone should repeat three times out loud with conviction each morning while looking at themselves in the mirror - it's a powerful exercise. It reinforces the concept and helps a person to remember that throughout the day, that they are responsible for everything they think, the attitudes those thoughts inspire and the actions that follow.

Shifting the responsibility for things that didn't quite work out is lazy, egotistical, negative and lacks ownership; taking the responsibility for what went wrong, poor performance or results, arguments in one's relationships and so on is positive because it opens the door to different thoughts, plans and strategies, increased motivation and other such positive elements all of which help a person live their best life.

What do you think about responsibility and how has taking it, or not taking it, impacted on your life? Are you a blame-shifter, do you sit back and let others take responsibility for those things you really should be? How do you perceive the value of taking responsibility in your own life? If you want to comment then go ahead.

The way I see it, doing something or taking action to achieve something can be considered responsibility. It extends to both professional and personal areas. Every person is responsible for their own life. They are responsible for making it successful or unsuccessful. One rainy evening, I suddenly felt like drinking too much alcohol because it was too cold. But I gave up on that idea thinking, "What will happen to my family if I get into an accident or end up in a police cell after drinking this? They will be sad because of me." I have a responsibility to my children, my wife, and my parents. The decision to take that responsibility is also ours. I have simply taught my eldest daughter the value of taking responsibility, so she does some things on her own.

Yep, that's partly the responsibility I'm talking about. One must make sure one is taking care of business so to speak.

I have learnt something great.especially the fact that states that "taking responsibility for the wrong done is positive that open door to different thoughts, plans, strategies and increase motivation ...." This is amazing.
Thank you for sharing this with us.

I believe that the most important aspect of taking responsibility, especially for the bad things that have happened, is the possibility of self-analysis and changing the path that led to those bad things. If we blame others, we will never be whole beings and masters of ourselves.

But of course... taking responsibility means putting your ego aside, and not everyone is willing to do that.

I am responsible for every thought that in turn generates things in material life, consequences, and whatever happens comes from me and the solution comes from me, from no one else.

Have you ever been egotistical and if so why?

Yes, I have been, and I did it to protect what little I had and my closest family.

Taking responsibility is what differentiate from a kid to a mature person, an adult who never takes any responsibility is not mature, is still a child. You are responsible for yourself, to sustain yourself, to keep a good feeling on others... I always taken my responsibilities when needed and now that I've got a kid I've become kinda overwhelmed because he is my full responsibility, to take care, keep healthy, educate and make the best choices possible for him

Has failure to take responsibility ever cost you? Caused you trouble I mean.

I remember one episode, when I was at high school, the prof did the interrogation, no one in 25 was ready, only me... But when she asked I said I wasn't ready, I didn't take the responsibility of my efforts, not of something I did wrong but of something I did well, of being the only one ready... And the trouble was a 4 mark (4/10) like the whole class and it took a while to get a decent average score (6 minimum to get promoted)

That's a good example, you conformed rather than take the responsibility for yourself. I think a lot of people defer to conformity these days as it feels comfortable, although I think greatness comes from individuality.

Yeah, people (even more teens) search approval from the group and being part of it, hence conformity becomes the must, on modern times even more than in the past decades

I think self discpline helps in handling responsibility pretty well. In my case, i get quite pumped up when a responsibility is assigned , but not in case when people just shift responsibility on me. I am happy to handle anything that include giving away the equal authority too... I mean there should be parity between authority and responsibility. They both compliment each other in fair way

Always... when i understand that I have to handle everything than I find own ways of doing it in the best way possible.

That's a tough one especially on the work side of things. There are a large number of things I could do where I work, but should I do them? Without clear guidelines, I don't really feel like they fit in the scope of my job. Others might disagree though, so I think a lot of it is opinion and perception. I don't hesitate to take responsibility when I am wrong or I screw up though, which is probably more important than who should be the one to update the web page :)

The thing is, if everyone showed a little more responsibility things would be easier for all.

Responsibility is doing those things we are up to doing and handling them in a proper way and when we couldn't, we fail in our responsibility, as a woman in the house there are things I do without any one reminding me to do them because I know they are my responsibility making sure everything in the house is order, children eat and goes to school at the right time even in my absence I call to make sure everything is going normal, that's my own part

One thing that I despise is the phrase "It is what it is" when people use it in the context of something they could change but pretend to be a victim instead.

Using your post yesterday as an example... "our house is always a mess because of our kids, it is what it is."

That mentality is infuriating to me. It is what YOU make it! Of course, that doesn't apply to things that are truly out of your control.

How do I apply this? If I don't like something, if it is within my sphere of influence and control, I try my best to take responsibility and make changes. A leader I admire uses the phrase "fix what bugs you" and I use that as motivation to make changes and improve things.

I'm with you there, it's a rather lazy statement and as you point out, usually incorrect. I also hate thos one..."it's all good." When my sister says it to me I know it's not all good and nowhere near good.

As far as change and improvement, I encourage people to make small changes, start with the smallest thing and then the next and so on...eventually that change-ethos becomes a habit and as the little things dwindle in number it takes people on to big things. Starting with those big things first us where many trip themselves up. It's basically the same as that phrase you mention in your last few lines.

I know the feeling, have a friend just like that 😂

Yes, I've found this to be really effective for me. There is a book called "2 Second Lean" that talks all about this. The company requires every employee to make one improvement every day that saves 2 seconds or more. It's super fascinating if you look up FastCap or Paul Akers on YouTube they have a bunch of videos showing improvements.

Anyway, I try to do this for myself at work and home. I don't do it every day, but I have made so many small improvements that compound to make a huge improvement in my life and work.

Toyota developed a system called TPS (Toyota Production System) starting in around the 1950's which works to save seconds in so many ways (moving stillages closer to operators for instance - less steps), It's where phases like JIT (Just in time) and words like Jidoka and Kaizen were applied to production. I think it can be implemented in a person's life, as you point out. It's designed to save waste as well of course, but I thought I'd mention it considering your comment.

Anyway, I try to do this for myself at work and home.

Indeed...everyone should.

Oh man, thanks for the reminder about Toyota. I read a book about them developing that system, so impressive!

Many years ago I got to tour the Toyota Plant here in California NUMMI. The level of efficiency and organization was mind-blowing. It was only a 45 minute tour but it changed my way of thinking about business for years.

You're welcome. Their methods are taught across so many companies to this day in many industries and in the office environments as well where wastage (time and other things) occur and the savings are often immense. There's a lot of lessons that can be gleaned and then implemented into every day life, a person just needs to want to do it. Some will and some will be like, it is what it is. I know who I'd rather be.

Hello @galenkp, we must fulfill various responsibilities every day. I believe one of the most important is taking care of our nutrition and well-being. Good health and performance at work and at home depend largely on this. Honestly, during my college days, I didn't give much importance to taking care of my health. At this age, I do my best to take care of it and take responsibility. When the plan doesn't work out as expected, it allows me to evaluate and correct any shortcomings.

Greetings!

We have a strong need to be responsible for many aspects of our lives but unfortunately so many people don't do so...and suffer the consequences sometimes.

For the last decade I've increased the amount of responsibility that I'm accepting, sometimes faster, sometimes slower. Sometimes too much, and I had to take a step back - for others, that is. Being responsible for creating work and income. Or their upbringing, in case of Lily. I always want to completely own that responsibility and live up to it. Doing so makes me feel free, like I'm in control of my life and my mind. It also keeps me in check, to not become too cocky and load too much on my back.

These days, I think more about it. I've become better at identifying when other shy away from responsibility, and better at avoiding those people - or poking them to see if they realize that it actually is their responsibility. Depends on the person.

The ability to take responsibility is one great trait that separates the inconsistent from the "real" people.

Education and character is what makes someone responsible, ready to take responsibility for the mistake he made.
I am a very responsible person and I absolutely accept failure, but only for what I have accepted as my commitment, whether in a business environment or in life.
I somehow have the ability to know where my limit is, so that I set a goal 10%, 20% over.
And I have an instinct to recognize when someone offers me obligations for which I will be responsible, and they exceed 50% or 100% of my capabilities.
When I commit to something, I do it regardless of whether it is to my own detriment.

Speaking of that, where is the weekend engagement invitation 🙂
Since you are also very responsible, I believe that the obligations are so pressing that today's topic is a bit on hold?
Or are you just on the plane, so you don't have internet? 🙂

I do love the phrase I am responsible, and the act of repetition (or affirmation, as the case may be) is genius, especially while looking yourself in the eyes. I've not yet done it, but I know it will be beneficial and easily incorporated into my daily routine.

I did it this morning! Of course, no noticeable change, but over time as it becomes a habit, I do expect change 😄.

Headed out now to the airport to pick up my sister. Haven't seen her in eleven years and I'm SO excited!.

Pondered this as to why one puts up with many things in life we may not even like, the word responsibility the only one that would contain understanding.

When young I had the term gaining "experience" many times, to my own or those around detriment (little wild cheeky teen). Parents with stern warning often used phrase each action we undertake comes with responsibility, only we will have to shoulder.

Moral of story I did learn, that responsibility catches up, reigns you in sooner than later.

I actually feel more empowered when I take responsibility for both good and bad stuff in my life. Having that sense of ownership means I celebrate my successes and also have the power to improve on my shortcomings and become better.
