Friends in the community, I hope you’re all well. Today I’m bringing you a rather interesting story: the 2023 film Tetris, which tells the story of the most famous game in history, one that managed to captivate millions of people – not just children. The film was directed by Jon S. Baird, with the screenplay by Noah Pink. My expectations for the film were really high. I hadn’t heard of the film before, but I found out about it on social media, so I didn’t hesitate to watch it. I’d actually had it on my list for a while, but due to time constraints, I hadn’t got round to it. Finally, I managed to watch it and today I’m sharing my thoughts with you, based on my personal experience.

My expectations for the film were really high; I had a feeling I was going to have a brilliant time, and I can say it’s ridiculously entertaining. That’s not to say the film is perfect, as it does have its flaws, but overall it’s pretty good. The story tells us how Tetris became one of the most successful games in the entire history of the video game industry. It recounts the race to secure licences for the game across different platforms. To be honest, I didn’t know that this game was created by a Soviet citizen in the midst of the Cold War, the struggle between the USSR (the Soviet Union) and the West, the clash between capitalism and communism. The documentary shows us how the licences had to be obtained, and how complicated it was in the 1980s, even though the USSR was already in decline. The Soviet programmer Alexey Pajitnov was the game’s creator, but he could not make any profit from it, as the government controlled the rights.

El día de hoy les traigo una historia bastante interesante, la película de 2023 llamada Tetris, que nos cuenta la historia del juego más famoso de la historia, que logró cautivar a millones de personas, no solo niños. Esta película fue dirigida por Jon S. Baird, con el guion a cargo de Noah Pink. Mis expectativas con la producción eran realmente altas. No sabía de la existencia del filme, pero por las redes sociales supe de su existencia, así que no dudé en verla, aunque bueno, la tenía en lista desde hace tiempo, pero por cuestiones de tiempo no lo había visto. Finalmente, lo pude hacer y hoy les traigo mi opinión, de acuerdo a mi experiencia personal.

Mis expectativas con el filme eran realmente altas, tenía la sensación de que la iba a pasar estupendamente bien y puedo decir que es ridículamente entretenida. Esto no quiere decir que la película sea perfecta, pues tiene sus detalles, pero en general está bastante bien. La historia nos cuenta cómo Tetris se convirtió en uno de los juegos más exitosos en toda la historia de la industria de los videojuegos. Nos cuenta la carrera por obtener las licencias del juego para las diferentes plataformas. Para ser sincero, desconocía que este juego fue creado por un soviético en plena Guerra Fría, la lucha de la URSS (la Unión Soviética) con Occidente, la lucha del capitalismo y el comunismo. La producción nos muestra cómo se debían obtener las licencias, lo complicado que era en los años 80, aunque ya la URSS estaba en declive. El programador soviético Alexey Pajitnov fue el creador del juego, pero este no podía tener ningún tipo de ganancias, pues el control era del gobierno.

Henk Rogers es quien descubre el juego Tetris, busca hacerse con la licencia para portátil, pues estaba que se estrenaba la Game Boy y qué mejor que hacerlo con ese juego que era diferente y que funcionaba para todo público. Es decir, que el filme nos muestra cómo Tetris llegó a ser de los mejores juegos y cómo fue la salida de una gran consola, que es el Game Boy. Tetris es el juego de puzles más famoso de la historia, que incluso ha servido como inspiración para otros videojuegos, pero nada como el original. La película está estructurada como un thriller basado en hechos reales, tiene bastante suspenso y más para aquellos que no conocíamos esta historia antes. Sinceramente, me encantó cómo se nos presentó la historia; en muchos momentos parecía que estábamos adentrados en el juego retro, pues a menudo vemos transiciones de escenas entre sí mediante píxeles de 8 bits superpuestos a las tomas de establecimiento de acción real. Esto último me pareció excepcional, sin lugar a dudas lo mejor de la producción.

The film is a Cold War thriller, with a touch of comedy at times. It’s a story based on real events, such as the impressive scale of espionage in the USSR and the web of corruption among companies vying for licences and huge profits. As I said, I find it a thoroughly entertaining story; it tells us this tale based on real events, letting us learn more about the successes achieved in the video games industry and how Henk Rogers, a gaming enthusiast, did everything to achieve his dreams, including risking his own life. The story is very well written, with well-developed characters, and it’s a pleasure to watch from start to finish.

Taron Egerton, playing Henk Rogers, did a wonderful job; he portrayed a complex character, a video game enthusiast who was passionate about this world and wanted to support his family through Tetris, a game that changed the lives of many people in terms of entertainment, not just children but adults too. Nikita Yefremov played Alexey Pajitnov, the game’s creator, a programmer who invented one of the best games in history. Anthony Boyle played Kevin Maxwell, the son of a businessman who wanted to secure the rights to the game for the handheld console. Kevin was a very arrogant character and Boyle played him excellently; although I saw him in the series Air Force One and his performance there was also good, but with a different character, which shows just how versatile he is. The film’s cast is brilliant, with great work from every single character.

La película es un thriller de la Guerra Fría, que tiene un toque de comedia en algunos momentos. Una historia basada en hechos reales, como el espionaje era impresionante en la URSS, la trama de corrupción entre las empresas para hacerse con las licencias y obtener grandes ganancias. Como les dije, me parece una historia bastante entretenida; nos cuenta esta historia basada en hechos reales, conocer más sobre los éxitos que se han tenido en la industria de los videojuegos y cómo Henk Rogers, un apasionado de los juegos, hizo todo por lograr sus sueños, incluso arriesgar su propia vida. La historia está muy bien escrita, con un buen desarrollo de los personajes, y da gusto ver de principio a fin.

Taron Egerton, como Henk Rogers, hizo un maravilloso trabajo; nos presentó un personaje cambiante, un entusiasta de los videojuegos, a quien le apasionaba este mundo y quería sacar a su familia adelante con Tetris, un juego que cambió la vida de muchas personas en cuanto al entretenimiento se refiere, no solo de niños, sino también de los adultos. Nikita Yefremov como Alexey Pajitnov, quien fue el creador del juego, un programador que inventó uno de los mejores juegos de la historia. Anthony Boyle hizo de Kevin Maxwell, el hijo de un empresario que quería hacerse con los derechos del juego para portátil. Kevin era un personaje muy arrogante y Boyle lo hizo excelentemente bien con el personaje; a pesar de que lo vi en la serie Los amos del aire y su interpretación también fue buena, pero con un personaje distinto, así que nos dice lo polifacético que es. El cast del filme está genial, un gran trabajo con cada uno de los personajes.

The cinematography is one of the film’s strongest points, particularly the way the story unfolds, with transitions reminiscent of a retro video game, which I found quite original. The film also excels in terms of the costumes and the various locations where the story takes place. The soundtrack was spot on, with background tracks that kept us on the edge of our seats wondering what might happen next, combined with some excellent plot twists. In conclusion, this film is very exciting and great fun to watch, although there are moments that are a bit over the top, but nothing that spoils the viewing experience; on the contrary, I think it’s a pleasure to see productions like this. A 10/10 regardless of any minor flaws it may have, but it is 100% recommended.

La fotografía es de lo mejor del filme, como se nos presenta la historia, con transiciones como si fuese un videojuego retro, lo cual me pareció bastante original. También con los vestuarios y los diferentes sitios donde se desarrolla la historia, la película cumple con creces. La banda sonora estuvo a la altura, con temas de fondo que nos dejaban con las expectativas de lo que podía suceder, combinado con los giros argumentales que fueron muy buenos. En conclusión, esta película es muy emocionante y muy divertida de ver, aunque hay momentos que son un poco exagerados, pero nada que arruine la experiencia con la producción; por el contrario, creo que da gusto ver trabajos así. Un 10/10 más allá de los detalles que pueda tener, pero sí que es recomendable al 100%.
