Arthur: A friendship without limits // Arthur: Una amistad sin límites | Movie review

One of the themes I love seeing in movies is those based on true stories, especially when they explore the connection between humans and animals—the bond we form with our pets, particularly those who come into our lives at a time that might not be the most ideal for us. The film I want to tell you about is Arthur: A Friendship Without Limits, directed by Simon Cellan Jones, with a screenplay by Michael Brandt, adapted from the book by Mikael Lindnord. I always connect with these kinds of stories, so I didn’t hesitate for a second to watch the movie.

Many might think the story is a cliché, since, to be honest, we’ve seen this kind of plot in other movies—stories that are quite similar—but the fact that it’s based on real events makes me want to watch it. This is a drama and adventure film that tells the story of Michael Light, who organized adventure races where participants risk their lives and go through all kinds of trials in the mountains and jungles. Michael never won a race until 2018; his last failure came in 2015 when, in Costa Rica, he took a risk in his quest to win but got stuck during one of the challenges on the first day of the competition, which effectively ended his athletic career. Our protagonist wasn’t content with just finishing the races, so he decided to return in 2018 with a strong team—though some of them were coming out of retirement—but each with the desire to win their first race.

After doing some research, I found out that the 2018 race took place in the Dominican Republic, in extremely challenging locations with adverse conditions that could even put the team’s lives at risk. That’s where Michael and his team encountered a dog that saved them and helped them on their journey—their adventure to achieve the long-awaited victory. The dog liked meatballs, so Michael named him Arthur, after King Arthur. An intelligent dog, though in poor condition and injured, he still managed to help these adventurers achieve victory, overcoming the greatest difficulties. Just when they thought they couldn’t make it, Arthur appeared to encourage them to keep going and at least cross the finish line, even if they couldn’t achieve victory.

Uno de los temas que me encanta ver en las películas son los basados en hechos reales y más cuando se trata de la conexión entre los humanos y los animales, el vínculo que logramos tener con las mascotas y más aquellas que llegan en un momento que tal vez no sea el más ideal para nosotros. La producción de la cual les quiero hablar es sobre Arthur: Una amistad sin límites, un filme dirigido por Simon Cellan Jones, mientras que el guion estuvo a cargo del escritor Michael Brandt, una adaptación del libro de Mikael Lindnord. Con estas historias siempre logro conectar, así que no dudé ni un segundo en ver la película.

Muchos podrían pensar que la historia es un cliché, pues, para ser sincero, la trama la podemos ver en otras películas, historias bastantes parecidas, pero al ser basada en hechos reales, me anima a verla. Esta es una película de drama y aventura que nos cuenta la historia de Michael Light, quien se dedicaba a realizar carreras de aventuras donde los participantes arriesgan sus vidas, pasan por cualquier cosa en las montañas y selvas. Michael nunca ganó una carrera hasta 2018, siendo su última fracaso en 2015 cuando en Costa Rica se arriesgó con el deseo de ganar, al quedar atrapado en unas de las pruebas en el primer día de la competencia, lo que supondría el final de su carrera deportiva. Nuestro protagonista no estaba tranquilo con terminar las competencias, por lo que decide volver en 2018 en compañía de un buen equipo, aunque algunos de ellos saliendo del retiro, pero cada uno con el deseo de ganar su primera carrera.

Investigando un poco, la carrera de 2018 fue en República Dominicana, en sitios sumamente complicados, con condiciones adversas que incluso podrían poner en riesgo la vida del equipo. Allí es donde Michael y su equipo se consiguen con un perro que los salvó y los ayudó en su travesía, en su aventura por conseguir el tan anhelado triunfo. Al perro le gustaban las albóndigas, por lo que Michael le colocó el nombre de Arthur, por el Rey Arturo. Un perro inteligente, pero que se encontraba en malas condiciones, fue herido, pero aun así logró ayudar a estos aventureros a lograr el triunfo, pasando por las mayores dificultades. Cuando creían que no lo podrían lograr, aparecía Arthur para motivarlos a continuar y cruzar al menos la línea de meta, más allá de no poder lograr el triunfo.

The film can be divided into three parts: what happens before the race, how our protagonist tries to return to racing with the goal of winning. The second part takes place during the race: Arthur’s appearance, the complications they face along the way, the bond the group forms with the dog, and finally, the third part covers what happens after the race—what became of the group, whether they managed to win or not, what happened to the dog—with an ending that may not be what many hoped for, or, on the contrary, a happy ending. A film about personal growth that is well worth watching.

What I like most about the plot is the message it conveys: regardless of whether he wins or not, our protagonist learns that what matters most is the unity of the group and being able to save a friend’s life—in this case, Arthur’s. It shows us compassion over ambition, resilience, and mutual loyalty. A film based on true events that shows us the importance of the people who accompany us, beyond crossing the finish line first in a competition and winning the trophy. The cinematography was handled by Jacques Jouffret, who beautifully captured the various locations where the story unfolds: the remote areas, the mountains, and the jungles where the races take place—stunningly beautiful settings that reflect the harshness of the competition. A visually stunning film.

La película se puede dividir en tres partes: lo que sucede antes de la carrera, cómo nuestro protagonista intentaba volver a participar en una carrera, buscando ganar la misma. La segunda es durante la carrera, como aparecen Arthur, las complicaciones que se les presentan en el recorrido, la conexión del grupo lograda con el perro y, finalmente, la tercera parte sería lo sucedido poscarrera, qué pasó con el grupo, si lograron ganar o no, qué sucedió con el perro, con un final que tal vez no sea el deseado por muchos o, por el contrario, con un final feliz. Una película de superación personal y que vale la pena ver.

Lo que más me gusta de la trama es el mensaje que nos deja, que, más allá de lograr el triunfo o no, nuestro protagonista aprende que lo más importante es la integridad del grupo y poder salvar la vida de un amigo, en este último caso de Arthur. Nos demuestra la compasión ante la ambición, la resiliencia y la lealtad recíproca. Una película basada en hechos reales que nos demuestra la importancia de las personas que nos acompañan, más allá de cruzar la línea primero en una competencia y obtener el trofeo. La fotografía estuvo a cargo de Jacques Jouffret, quien representó muy bien los diferentes lugares donde se desarrolla la historia: los lugares remotos, las montañas, selvas donde se dan las competencias, lugares muy hermosos donde se da una competencia que refleja la rudeza de la misma. Una película bien representada en lo visual.

The film's soundtrack does the job; I don't think it's anything spectacular like in other movies, but it does serve its purpose, which is to tie the scene you're watching to moments of adrenaline, tension, and emotion. Arthur is a movie with a good story, quite entertaining, with excellent cinematography in my opinion, and a cast that’s up to the task, featuring Mark Wahlberg as Michael—a performance on par with what we’ve come to expect from him, at least in the movies I’ve seen him in. It’s a movie with a very good message, and I have no hesitation in recommending it from start to finish.

La banda sonora del filme cumple; creo que no es nada espectacular como otros filmes, pero sí que cumple con su cometido, que es conectar el momento que se está viendo con momentos de adrenalina, momentos complicados y emotivos. Arthur es una película con una historia buena, bastante entretenida, con una fotografía muy buena desde mi punto de vista, con un cast a la altura, con la participación de Mark Wahlberg como Michael, una actuación a la altura como nos tiene acostumbrados, al menos de los filmes que he visto del actor. Una película con un mensaje muy bueno y que no dudo en recomendársela de principio a fin.
