Springtime, Sled, New Ballast Bag, Aim, Dentist, Glider, Car Headlight Install - Monday
Nice days now and yesterday was bright and sunny. I got the boys to school in the morning then as I was doing a quick check on the possible flying conditions I found serious potential for big air today in the Chewelah area. The RASP post to the club got immediate interest and there will be some of us up there flying today.
The sled needed to be checked, all the fluids were fine but I did notice that I could use a new fuel filter so have that in the cart for next order.
While thinking about BIG air I realized that I REALLY need to ballast myself. I sit in the low end of my wing's weight range. All up I'm about 195lbs but the wing is rated for 187-231lbs. I really only need a gallon of water to bring my weight up to near the mid point of the wing's range. I looked for paragliding ballast bags and found they are just a type of camp shower. Most built a bit tougher but why spend $50 when a $15 camp shower from North 40 will do just as well.
So off to North 40 I went and they had them in stock.
The gas gauge is off in the sled so it was showing well below half tank and I stopped to top it off. Turned out to be half empty/full and only took a bit under 8 gallons. It's getting 23 mpg right now which is not too bad for a 30 year old Sub.
The ballast bag got a gallon in it and it slid into the harness with ease. The addition puts me at 205 lbs all up weight which is hopefully going to make my wing less fluttery and more stable in bigger air.
I stopped at the board for a bit in passing and managed this nice close grouping. The 19's are feeling better now and I'm dialing in the slight difference in grip needed to throw at the lower part of the board.
R had his dentist appointment so I went and picked him up after school so he would be home for @stryeyz to take him in. Good time to read up on thermalling.
While they were in town I did some work on my wing. I had shortened the brake lines for better response but they had my arms up really high in flight. I lengthened them out again a ways to hopefully lower my arms and allow longer flights but still have a responsive wing.
His spacer in place. The baby tooth came out and the adult tooth still has years before it will push through so to keep the space available the spacer was installed.
I went to pick J up after running club and on the way back into the farm UPS was delivering the new headlight for the big Subaru.
It took popping the bumper panel loose to access the bolts and there is a good bit of broken plastic parts but I managed to get the headlight in place and solid.
Wing ready for today. Flying will happen somewhere.
Good soak but I was beat and ready for bed.
Today I will get the boys to school, go to my chiro appointment, then sometime will head north to find a place to fly. The big air is north today and not down at Tekoa but looks like some may go down there.
