There is a possibility of them popping if they get crushed or just by age and being mediocre grade batteries. Most I find are along the side of the road where a fire would not do much, but it does seem possible.

Oh I agree. I find dump sites all over the area on back roads, hell even side roads to Hwy 2. Only a 100 feet away from the highway some one had dumped a trailer loaded with trash. 5 miles north of the transfer station.
