Rain, Harvests, PDC, Play Day, Garlic Trimming, Seed Planning - Monday

It had only sprinkled overnight but yesterday morning the clouds really moved in and we managed to get more than just sprinkles at times.

It was super spotty most of the day as little bands would come through and essentially mist the farm. I got out early to get harvests done which were on the minimal side. 5+ pounds of summer squash.

Then the 4 cucumbers.

And just a small handful of peas. The pea plants are pretty beat up from the heat so they aren't long for the garden. I probably should get seeds in the empty rows?

Mid morning the storm spun around enough to toss heavier bands at us. It really kept the temps cooler all day and I didn't have to close the house up to keep it cool.

I took the boys up to their friend's house for a play day before 10 then was home for the mid day to work without the distractions.

PDC is on mid days so I have that on and catch bits as I am in and out of the house. RVB got whooped by MVG... of course...

Around noon we got the first heavier band of rain to come through. I worked on sorting some of the rocks on the deck for a while and kept out of the drip line of the pergola.

Mid afternoon the boys arrived back at the farm and soon were buried back in their rooms. I headed up to the garden shed and worked on more of the garlic trimming. It's taking time since they are drying at different rates. The first I did was the Armenian which gave me 2.75 pounds from the 1 pound planted.

Then the Silver White is my current champ for production. I planted only half a pound and got 2.75 pounds, so 5.5x seed. The next best is the Siberian at 5.0x seed.

The last one for the day was the Uzbekistan which are a much smaller sized head but I got 3 pounds from the 1 pound of seed.

Near 4pm another band of rain came through and chased me off from the garlic trimming. I spent a bit at my spreadsheet working the numbers for the garlic. So far I have harvested twice the weight I have planted and still have 5 varieties to trim. I hope to get 3x what I planted to then at least double what I plant for next year.

The beets needed thinning again and put out a nice slug of the roots. It works pretty well to cram the seeds in each spot so I can come through and thin over the season which allows the smaller to grow in and extend the harvesting.

The boys took forever to make dinner so it was later we got out to soak.

Today rain is still floating about and it is a lot cooler. I have my chiro appointment this morning which I seriously need as my back and hips are THRASHED right now. I'll get harvests done, then have to work on the old garlic area weeding it and prepping for planting again. Need to figure out where am flying tomorrow.

You certainly get serious about garlic! I need to try a new variety one of these years. I just plant what was left from last year. What is the variety of squash with the stripes?

Garlic is the best crop, most minimal of work required.

Those are Table Dainty summer squash and and the name is a MAJOR misnomer, you look away for 15 minutes and they go from small to mammoth sized.

I hope the rain is clearing out for your flight tomorrow, my friend!💪😊
I guess everyone needed a little bit of rain. We had a bit overnight that came down from Canada. Strange weather pattern….. rain usually comes in from the ocean!🤔
