Pew, Feathers, Slackline, Weeding, Marmot, Kiting, MY EAGLE!, NHL, Dinner - Tuesday

First thing yesterday morning I was at North 40 to go through the paperwork to buy the new pew. This fucking state is insane for buying and in typical progressive fashion I have more and more bullshit to go through and more and more time to wait. While there I did get a new archery target for the boys which J tried out right away and found his bow is too weak so we ordered him a new one that will last him till adult.

I also got one of my books, but this one is much more advanced and will be for later reading.

Before noon I was up wandering the upper property looking for eagle debris when I found this egg laying on the ground. It had cracked and emptied in the fall but looked perfect as it sat.

A couple feathers were in the pen beneath their preening trees.

Finally remembered to setup the slackline, I happened to see it when in the gear shed.

More weeding in the garden as the strip needed to be cleared between plastic sheets.

Then I went through the potato rows and got the weeds pulled and found that a lot of the marigolds are growing well amongst the potato tops that are soon to start flowering.

It was after 3pm and I was watching the winds blow in the valley so decided to go up and do some kiting. I was walking out to hike up the hill when I heard a chirp that didn't sound like a bird. I then saw the marmot in front of the Tardis and it jumped into one of the holes then stared out at me. The rocks went over the holes then I went and got the pistol and dispatched it. The things eat eggs and produce.... WAS NOT going to let it continue to steal.

So then I headed up the hill to go kite and when I got there the wind was blowing from the east.... not exactly kiting direction.

IMG_20250617_154342.jpg

After a bit the cycle changed and I got the wing out.

IMG_20250617_155244.jpg

I had been kiting for half an hour and had the wing laid out waiting on the winds when I watched one of my bald eagles flying over the trees above me. It headed south along the tree line then turned and flew over the highway. THEN THE BEST THING HAPPENED!!!!

I watched as my eagle made turns in search of lift but it would keep having to flap its wings. It would spin a couple turns then flap a few times and glide to the next spot that IT NORMALLY FINDS LIFT! It did this exact thing in FOUR DISTINCT SPOTS that are normal places it finds lift. I was enraptured with this display and I kept saying out loud "nope, not good lift" each time it flapped. It finally gave up after the fourth attempt at a thermal and flew back to the nest.

I was shown 4 places of regular lift, now I just need the balls to try it myself.

XAlps is incredible with some truly psycho takeoffs. The video is insane. I'm constantly checking the live tracking during the day.

The NHL cup was won by Florida! Very happy they beat the Oilers. So great seeing a sad McDavid.

The boys made dinner. They made a pizza which used the tortilla recipe for the crust and came out pretty damned good. They like to set things up as a date night for us.

IMG_20250617_191629.jpg

They made a cheese cake during the day! It came out DELICIOUS!

My tires arrived for my bike but late so they got set aside for today. We got a soak in before bed.

Today is going to be pumping wind so no flying but maybe kiting if I go up to the high school. I will get the tires changed on my bike first thing and likely go for a ride to try them out, am glued to the X-Alps, have more weeding and mowing to do, it's to rain Sat/Sun so need to be thinking ahead for covering anything.

Marmots are so destructive………
In Colorado they ate all the grass in our horse pasture, and dug dozens of holes for our horses to accidentally stepped in!🙄

Yeah during my landscaping days I dealt with them a lot and they were NOT good for water features. Numerous times we had them chew through the liner below the concrete which was hell to fix.

I can imagine……😳
One time I drove my truck up to the top of the continental divide in Colorado at a place called Alpine Tunnel at 11,800 feet and went for a hike. When we returned back to my truck, they had chewed through some of the vacuum hoses that controlled some of the buttons on my dash of the truck!🤬
Very destructive animals!!

In Valhalla park in BC at the trail head there is rolls of chicken wire to lay around the vehicle to keep them from chewing the brake lines and electrical.

Wow….. interesting I never would’ve thought they would go after the hoses and brake lines on vehicles!
I guess I got lucky with just a vacuum line!😇

Up there it's bad. There are also mountain goats that will sit feet away from you as they lick at the pee you didn't feel like walking farther away to let go in the middle of the night.
