Our 19th Anniversary Day Out in Idaho

As I sat down yesterday morning to write my post a little Western Fly Catcher thwacked against the window next to me and I watched as it and it's mate hauled twigs to the nesting spot in the corner of the patio roof. They are tiny little birds.

I have a couple nests that I have found around the farm set on the railing beneath them and they have been snagging lots from both.

After getting the boys to school @stryeyz and I headed out for the day. First stop was the Blanchard Hump and a trip up the 4x4 trail to 3 Rocks.

HOLY SHIT BERRY BUSHES!!!!! Thimbleberries lined the entire road up for a mile then at every bend there was huge masses of them. In about a week or 2 they will be ripe and there will be many hundreds of pounds potential.

Found a couple pretty slick looking possible launch sites for the paraglider, just need a landing spot...

It was great to finally get up to the rocks after so many years of hearing of them.

It was everything I thought it would be, TOTALLY possible to launch the paraglider, again just need an lz. I have a bunch of driving around to do to find some possible spots.

The northwest side of Mt Spokane.

The rocks have some toprope problems and some highball bouldering. There is a pair of anchor bolts on top of the main rock. The rock is a bit decomposing so not the strongest feeling but really gritty.

We headed back down the trail to the road and then over to Spirit Lake for breakfast at Annie's Country Kitchen. I had a few potential places for us to go and Rathdrum's place showed busy before we left, which worked great as we got there and got our food as lots of people filed in later.

IMG_20250610_100852.jpg

We both had salmon. Super tasty and took leftovers for today.

IMG_20250610_102049.jpg

Then it was a bit of schlep down into CDA and to bookstores. We first went to the Well Read Moose which is a new book store but we found some great books about local geology and a waterfall guide.

Then we drove up to Bookishly Happy used books where I found some killer books. The 9th edition of the mountaineering book I saw the new 10th for sale at the prior store for $45 was only $8...

I saw this and instantly had to get it for my Dad. The info in this is exactly what he needs and can use. I have to ship it to him today.

So then the next schlep back north out of CDA and Hayden, back through Spirit Lake and up the Spirit Lake Cutoff road to Priest River where we stopped at The Settlement for drinks and food.

It was perfect as the place was largely empty and the food was super tasty. Tuesdays in the region are taco specials and we split the shrimp tacos. We each had one and brought one home for leftovers.

I had timed the day just about perfect as the drive home got us in the door about 3 minutes after the boys got home from school.

IMG_20250610_135559.jpg

No desire to cook for dinner we went out to eat.

IMG_20250610_171253.jpg

Hop Mountain is not far and ended up having taco Tuesday special that was really delicious and affordable. $7.50 for 3 mixed variety which was a perfect amount of food for each of us.

Home, soaking, then a late night meant I got very little sleep.

I was up at 5am this morning, hooked the trailer up, went to town and got grain, emptied the grain out and unhooked the trailer. Boys last half day of school then they are on summer break, I have to fix the radiator hose on the sled, grass needs cutting all over the farm, have to call about my tow bridle, and work in the garden and greenhouse.

Looks like a great anniversary outing! Annie's Kitchen is a pretty nice little place. I've never been to The Settlement. Might have to give it a try. I also need to acquaint myself with Bookishly Happy. I haven't been there since it was Browser's Uncommon Books.

The Settlement was pretty nice. They even give a pocket constitution with the bill. I could see it being busy at times but we hit it on a lull so it was nice and mellow. The food was REALLY good. Annie's was great, @stryeyz and I have always loved a good breakfast cafe and hers is obviously well loved in town judging by the throngs of people walking in who she knew all of them. Plus great food helps.
