July 4th Climbing and Bouldering, Sailing Columbia River, Rainbow, Fireworks - Friday

Headed north yesterday morning to the Colville area, we managed to get out of the house around 9am and after a stop at the store we met up with Art and Jess in Kettle Falls.

The new climbing area Art found is super awesome and has oodles of route potential.

The boys bouldered around the lower sections of the walls.

Art put up the top rope on the short climb he had cleaned.

My phone got wonky when the iso got moved while J was getting pics of me on the route.

R needed a bit of a boost to get up to holds that he could possibly use. He had more fun just hanging on the rope.

Jess gave it a go and had a hard time on the initial moves. Then Art bounded up the climb but it helps seeing the beta of the others to better know how to climb a route. By this time it was 1 pm and we were all hot and ready for the river.

We stopped at Sandy's drive-in for food to go and then drove the few miles to Ricky Point where the sailboat marina/mooring buoys are.

It took a bit to get everything ready, Art had to paddle out to the boat then bring it to the dock.

By 3pm we were under way and Allie showed up with her parents and cousin in their faster motored boat.

That is the scar left from the landslide last year or 2 years ago that blasted a 4 foot high wall of water across the river right at Ricky Point and at Colville Flats. There is still debris in the water from it, trees sticking up 50 feet from the wall... It did make them build the new dock at Ricky Point which is much nicer than the old one.

We sailed north up the river then underneath the Kettle Falls bridge. This is the main bridge over the Columbia river for the region, the only other bridges are 60 miles to the south or 34 miles to the north.

IMG_20250704_165425.jpg

It's a dual bridge span, one for the vehicles and the other for trains.

We passed under the bridges then Todd brought his boat up for a transfer of the boys so they could get a a ride on the faster boat.

The boys made the transfer just fine and then had a blast as Todd took them all around the river.

We headed for Singer bay and were rather surprised to see nobody around. It seemed the cloudy day had kept many people off the water, despite it being warm enough. We tied the boats off on shore and hung out for an hour or so talking and letting the boys play.

They had found a nifty area to go digging around in.

I found this June bug sitting on a small plant right above the water so I picked it up and put it up on the log nearby.

The macro on my phone is pretty good.

IMG_20250704_182342.jpg

It was time to head out for the motor back to the mooring and Todd tossed the boogie board at the boat for Jess but it flew past into the water to which R went and got it.

IMG_20250704_184713.jpg

He then sat shivering on the bow riding along as we made out way back.

IMG_20250704_185416.jpg

It was a bit after 8pm when we got to the dock and unloaded.

The clouds that had been around all day were bringing in the storm and rain from the northeast but it was still a bit away.

As we were driving south for home between Colville and Chewelah there was rain falling and I was able to see the right side of the rainbow then the left side showed up super bright.

IMG_20250704_205514.jpg

It was a massive rainbow that spanned much of my view. The left side had the full spectrum showing.

IMG_20250704_205705.jpg

The stands were still open at the casino so we stopped for the boys. Got more packs of fire crackers/ lady fingers then headed home. The entire way on our drive we got to watch fireworks going off EVERYWHERE! It was far more than we normally see from the farm and with most people already in place to watch them the roads weren't horrible. The boys then spent an hour once we were home outside blasting off bottle rockets and fireworks.

Woke to it raining this morning and it will be for a while still. Today am not positive what yet, I'm not sure I want to go berry picking in the rain so that may be tomorrow morning. I need to work in the garden, probably harvest more garlic, PDC is on, the house needs cleaning, then this evening I will likely grill for dinner.
