HUGE Predawn Grain Run, Sunrise Mist, Spider, Harvests, Berries, Gear, Hay Cover - Wednesday

4:40 am I was on the road to town yesterday morning to get grain. It felt SOOOOOO good to be in my truck again for this task.

IMG_20250917_044040.jpg

I got to the first brewery to find 4 barrels full and a tiny bit in the other.

IMG_20250917_050111.jpg

Knowing I had more grain to load at the other brewery I tried to pile the 4 barrels in far to the front to try to leave room.

IMG_20250917_050849.jpg

I rather like the grain runs this time of year, the dark feels better to be shoveling in than the bright summer mornings.

IMG_20250917_051235.jpg

Tried to get a shot of the pavilion roof as I drove by.

IMG_20250917_051618.jpg

Got the second brewery and had to make some decisions on loading.

IMG_20250917_052005.jpg

Given this was the space available for me to load the 4 barrels to...

IMG_20250917_052009.jpg

I got 3 barrels crammed onto the trailer with a healthy amount of slop over. I used the ramp to get the lightest of the barrels into the bed of the truck then up ended it after I closed the tail gate.

IMG_20250917_053046.jpg

One MASSIVE load of grain that was an excellent 2nd test of my truck.

IMG_20250917_053236.jpg

Fucking gas prices at $4.17/gal!

IMG_20250917_053832.jpg

As I headed home the sunrise was beginning.

IMG_20250917_054839.jpg

Just past Cat Tails the open field had a killer layer of mist shrouding it.

IMG_20250917_055446.jpg

Then the corner by Woolard Mt Spokane was visible.

IMG_20250917_055545.jpg

IMG_20250917_055549.jpg

Then the best view of the mist and sunrise.

IMG_20250917_055551.jpg

The burn scar had a nice layer in it as well.

I got home, got my post done, got the boys to school, then went out to harvest in the garden. I'm nearing just pulling the squash plants now as production has tanked.

IMG_20250917_091607.jpg

I opened the coop door to weigh the squash and as the door opened my barn spider snagged a bug that I flushed. I saw a little bit of movement as she grabbed it then hunkered down to inject it.

IMG_20250917_091710.jpg

She really is a badass! I'd love to find a way to keep her alive over winter if possible but it gets well below freezing in the barn. I would have to bring her in the house our the studio but the food supply is not the best over winter.

IMG_20250917_091714.jpg
IMG_20250917_091723.jpg

I was picking in the greenhouse and pulled this lipstick pepper off the plant and saw THIS!!!! WHAT IN THE LIVING HELL?!?!?

IMG_20250917_092825.jpg

I'm pretty sure somehow the pepper grew to the stem of the plant because it pulled off with a bit of a pop.

IMG_20250917_092829.jpg

Just incredibly odd looking!

IMG_20250917_092838.jpg

Moderate amount in the basket for the day.

IMG_20250917_092945.jpg

Once the harvest was done I went to unload the grain. The sheep and alpaca were quite pushy about getting their snouts buried in the grain.

IMG_20250917_101332.jpg

One hell of a lot of shoveling...

IMG_20250917_101336.jpg

I managed to get the trailer emptied to various spots around the pen, tipped the bed liner, then had the last bits in the truck bed to remove.

IMG_20250917_102635.jpg

The bad part is the pen becomes a marsh in winter when it isn't frozen...

IMG_20250917_102818.jpg

Sprayed the truck bed out good which needed to be cleaned anyway.

IMG_20250917_103804.jpg

Anyone need any belladonna for anything? It grows wild all around the farm. Now is the time when the berries are ripe if anyone needs I can gather.

IMG_20250917_114903.jpg
IMG_20250917_114911.jpg

Spent some time in the gear shed piling rack and ropes into the haul bag for after my SIV. Art and I will have a few days in Blogget canyon so want to make the most of it.

IMG_20250917_121417.jpg

The elderberries are looking pretty dank right now with their full ripeness.

IMG_20250917_142038.jpg

AS are the chokecherries.

IMG_20250917_142147.jpg

@stryeyz co-worker asked about corn stalks so I popped the few out of the garden that I have for her.

IMG_20250917_142639.jpg

The hay bales needed covering so after moving them farther down the pallets I slid the pallet covers over them. These bales are smaller than the prior so the covers fit a lot better. I put my shitty old tarp over to help keep the covers from getting too sun baked. This is the 4th or so year I have reused these and still have more than half the roll left I originally bought. VERY much getting money's worth out of the roll.

IMG_20250917_151140.jpg

Our first session went pretty well despite my trepidations. Afterwards we headed to Panda to pickup dinner then bolted for home.

IMG_20250917_184705.jpg

After a new episode of Futurama headed out to soak, which got interrupted by J's Minecraft fiasco after he fell for a honeypot... Trying to teach him NOT to fall for that shit but sometimes the hand has to touch the stove.

IMG_20250917_202220.jpg

I just ordered a new sleeping bag as my old Mtn Hardware crazy legs bag is 30 years old and Klymit has their own version now!!! Super Stoked! Also got one of their sleeping pads though this trip I will be using my crash pads to sleep on.

Today I'll get the boys to school, go to PT, then to Napa for the exhaust gaskets, get harvest done, work on truck, then J has the next CC meet at his school so it will be a nice 7 minute drive there.

Interesting that corn stocks on the western side are apparently a hybrid that stays green longer according to Grok……
In Colorado, they would turn completely brown in the fall, and we used them for decorating around the driveway gate.
Over here, you can’t find any that turn completely brown🤔

Not cold enough? Not sure, I grow so little corn so just get what I get most times.

Do your corn stocks turn completely brown?
I remember growing up in Cincinnati the most popular corn was silver queen. Back there all the stocks turned completely brown in the fall it didn’t matter if we had a warm fall or a cold fall……😮

These did even with constant water on them. I grew up above the Cali central valley and non of the corn was ever left to dry, it was all cut for fresh corn. It wasn't until ND where I saw stalks standing dry for meal corn or whatever.

Interesting how different parts of the country harvest their crops in such different ways!😇

J somehow got scammed online? In Minecraft? I guess lessons learned early are lessons learned best.

Yeah...a link to a "giveaway" on Discord.
Microsoft is garbage though, they allow a CHILDREN'S account to be changed to a different email without parental notification or approval. First time it happened it was so hard to even get a real person to chat with and then account "recovery" turned into account locked and can never use that email ever again with Microsoft. What a joke. I told him we're not paying for Minecraft a 3rd time... He's welcome to, but I'm not doing it. Also told him to make an my email JUST for Minecraft because his really cool email address that I made for him was the latest victim... TBD on account recovery, it's in the queue but I'm not expecting much from it.

Gotta learn eventually not to enter account info on unverified sites and if a giveaway seems too good to be true, it probably is.

You really had an eventful day, that's lovely.
I love the way you arranged your activities and attend to them one after the other. And secondly, I love how you tell your stories with pictures. Thank you for sharing.

One of ways I make it easy on myself is all my pics in my phone are ordered by time stamp so when I go to dump my pics to a post I sort them by name and then can just work through pic by pick and describe my day.

That's lovely... I love your method. I need to try it out

I upload all my images for the day to my Peakd template with my footer then select and cut them all out and paste into my word program and select all and sort a->z then cut and paste back to Peakd. It all takes about 30 seconds after the images have uploaded.

I so much like the fact that you and your boys are eating very fresh homemade crops from your own farm. This is very helpful and a healthy way to live a sickness free life.
