Grain Run, Sunrise, Harvests, Garlic, Berry Picking POW, Fledglings, Sorting, Helpful Chickadee - Saturday
I was out of the house early yesterday morning on my way to town for grain. The back side of the small system was moving off to the east and gave a nice sunrise.
I got to the brewery and the barrels of grain before 6am.
Within 10 minutes I had the grain loaded up and the sun had just peaked out behind the clouds.
I headed for home as the sky brightened but parked the trailer for a while until a bit later in the morning.
After 8am I went out and shoveled out the grain. I WAS going to spread it in the garlic spot but it would have taken more time than I wanted to give so just piled it for the sheep and birds.
The parents were nonstop feeding the young in the morning.
I got out into the garden and got 5 pounds of squash and a half pound of peas picked an in the cooler.
Then I went to the garden shed and setup a screen outside to begin the garlic processing. I had to cut the tops and roots off, brush dirt off, then count them as I tossed them into the paper bags to finish curing in the house.
I got through a few varieties before it was time to go berry picking.
So back up to the hump we went and only had to drive in a mile before we found THE patch. Holy shit was this patch killer. About 120 feet long and stretching downhill and uphill it was FILLED with perfectly ripe thimbleberries.
I parked up the road a bit and we then spent the next hour and half in just the one patch.
I tromped through the bushes and it was really nice when they were taller than me so the berries hung below in a super easy way to pick.
Berry Picking proof of work. My hands were SO STICKY!!!
Total of 5.75 pounds of thimbleberries are now in the freezer on trays before going to the freeze dryer.
The Fly Catchers fledged. I didn't meant to make them, I was just getting a few pics from a chair a few feet from them.
I got the pics of their grimacing and glaring faces and as I stepped back down from the chair all 4 of them bolted in different directions. I could only watch one of them which ended up in the chokecherry tree nearby. The parents then spent the day calling for them and taking bugs to them where they were.
Got through one of the 5 gallon buckets that we dug and have it classified into the 3 grades. Later in the day I washed the large and medium sized and we sported through most of it. Some really awesome stones popped out of the mix.
It was hot in the mid day so I moved my garlic station inside the shed. It works well since the garlic hang directly overhead. I absolutely LOVE the Siberian garlic! It's HUGE and super delicious. I spent some time in my spread sheet trying to decide how much I want to save for seed for next season.
Boys went to a birthday party for the evening and I had stepped out the house and heard birds cheeping so I went and was looking around the chokecherry when a little black capped Chickadee flew right in front of me and landed on a branch. As I followed it I then saw the wasp nest.
The Chickadee was peeping and chirping as it hopped down a bit and I watched it take the bottom of the nest tunnel off in its beak.
The super helpful little bird showed me the nest and took what it needed from it. I then swatted the nest down and crushed it.
UFC was okay. I missed most of the last fight though.
I'm packed for flying today but am not sure where or when... May try Tekoa again this morning, will see. If not then I have plenty to do around the farm.

Wow… that’s a tremendous amount of thimbleberries!👍😊
They are definitely messy when you pick them, just a little too much pressure and they squish all over you Lol!🤣☺️
That’s very smart freeze drying them!👍
The only berry that is already in jam form when it comes off the plant, lol.
lol!!!🤣
So very true!😇
I’ll have to see if I can find some on my hike today!😊
Never heard of a thimbleberry. Look a lot like red raspberries!
Similar look but WAY different texture. And also WAY harder to pick.
That looks a lot like the human blood, I was going to ask if you had some wounds.
