Doctor, Sighting, Lunch, Harvest, GARLIC Is Finished, Natives, Trailer - Thursday

It was appointment time yesterday morning for the boys. They needed a new primary and J needed his sports physical for the coming school year. It took a while and both boys were still half asleep most of the time, in fact R tried to sleep in a pile behind us.

Eventually the appointment was over and @stryeyz took J to look for shoes and I took R with and we got gas before going to lunch.

We had a sighting of a little person in the wild. I couldn't say anything to R but he sure did see. I was particularly intrigued as to how she was able to drive the car. R just got measured over 4 feet tall and she is shorter than that. I watched when she open the door and saw a huge stack of cushions she sat on and I can only presume she has adapted something for reaching the pedals.

Headed to Applebee's for lunch which also ended up being my dinner.

It was after noon before I got into the garden but it wasn't really an issue since I only had a handful of squash ready.

It was hot outside in the sun so I setup the screen in the garden shed to finish the garlic up. The last 5 varieties all got the roots and tops trimmed off then bagged and hauled into the house.

Here is the outcome of this year's garlic harvest.
13 varieties grown.
923 heads harvested from 1011 cloves planted.
47.8 pounds harvested from the 12.5 pounds planted.
By weight: 382% average and 175% - 550% harvest from the 1 pound or half pound planted.
By clove: 91.3% average and 76% - 105% bulbs grown from the cloves planted.
Best production: Silver White @ 105%/550%
Worst production: Inchelium Red @ 76%/175%
Seed saved: 26 pounds

I have 9 more varieties ordered which will bring me up to 22 for this next season and 42 pounds I will be planting. If I can get another near 400% production I could end up with over 160 pounds this time next year.

Had to take the boys to town for VBS, dropped them and then headed home in the awful 5pm traffic.

Ye bags O garlic! I will be pulling out the biggest of each variety to use for the seed for next year. Big cloves equals big heads. I at least know for sure that I will have the best from what I have grown this year.

I was walking up to the garden shed when I noticed the trifecta of natives in full ripeness. The chokecherry is loaded.

Then 5 feet away the Oregon Grape is full and ripe.

IMG_20250724_192852.jpg

Then less than 10 feet further is the hawthorn that is mostly ripe.

Back there on the right behind the hawthorn is one of the elderberries but they are not ripe yet.

They got home from VBS and soon were out soaking but I had given myself raw spots from scratching and barely made it 20 minutes before I was out and in pain.

I had to get the trailer hooked up for the grain run I have done this morning.

IMG_20250724_211309.jpg

Been to town and back for the grain, dropped the trailer in the yard and left the grain in so I can wheelbarrow it up to the garlic garden. I realized I can just move the needles to the side that the garlic did the worst and push the rows away from that fence. I have to move the needles before I can spread the grain. Azure pickup early afternoon then figure out food for them before VBS.

We either have a lot of Hawthorne or chokecherry on our hiking trails. I wasn’t sure what we had. I’ll have to take your photo and compare the next time we hike!😀
