Nonnas 2025 Movie Review
Yesterday i decided to watch a brand new movie called Nonnas. The movie was released on 09/05/25 by Netflix and some of the stars are Vince Vaughn, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Susan Sarandon, Joe Manganiello and Drea de Matteo. This is basically a comedy but the main reason that made me watch it was that it is actually based on real life events and real people.
Plot
So the story follows Joe Scaravella an Italian fellow living in Brooklyn who grew up with his Italian family and everything that goes along with it. Joe, lost his mother, who loved so much. Now Joe doesn't actually know what to do with his life but his close friends Bruno and Stella advice him to take his mother's insurance money, around 200k and renovate his house.
Joe finds himself in Staten Island where apparently he meets with an old friend from school. Due to that and also a shop that he sees and likes he decides to invest the insurance money in opening a restaurant even though he doesn't really have any idea on how to run this thing.
His idea is rather unique, he decides to bring over grandmas as chefs as he wants the place to look like and feel like a home to everyone and also for everyone to taste dishes that are being made with love. At the same time he wants to help all these grandmas that don't have anything to do and some have even given up on life.
The true and hidden reason though, is that through this atmosphere and food, he will feel closer to his mother and also honor her in some way. So a series of events takes place on how he builds his restaurant, the different grandmas that he brings over, the difficulties that he faces and the aftermath.
Good & Bad
Some of the good things about the movie are the cast. Most of them are actual Italians so they don't need to "play a role" that much, it comes naturally. Also we get to see actual character development not only regarding Joe's life but we also get to see how the grandmas take everything and how their lives are getting better with this experience.
It also acts as a reminder of 3rd age and how we need to take better care of them. It also brings memories, the good ones that most of us have or had with our grandparents, especially the food part if you are from a country that shares the same let's say values.
The drawbacks for me, is that i actually read and heard the real story, which is not exactly the same. Even though most parts are, there are some events that are more tragic in real life than Joe had to undergo. At the same time because Netflix is Netflix for some reason that honestly and literally was pushed, was that one grandma had a sad story on how she was a lesbian and got into a monastery due to how hard it was at her time. To that i say to Netflix, to get @@@ and instead to just focus on the actual story.
All in all it is a decent and good movie, you can watch it with your family, children, grandparents and friends. I would also urge you, after watching i,t to go and search and read the actual story as well!. Also if you live in New York you can actually go and eat there! Overall, i would give it a 7/10 and i strongly believe that if Netflix was focusing more in the actually story it could easily earn 1 to 1.5 more points!

Vince Vaughn in this? Sounds like a hilarious take on those real-life events! 😂🐎
let me know if you watch it!
I've watched it interested by the plot but ok its enjoyable but I think there are too many stereotypes maybe because I'm Italian I had this feeling probably the true story it's less full of stereotypes.
I thought so too, especially with the 3 grandmothers fighting over at the beginning.
