Ayer se jugó la primera jornada en las ligas de la Toronja y el Cactus. Cerró, de éste modo, la larga espera por el béisbol. Y en el site de MLB.com, nos dimos cuenta que -al menos para Venezuela- se transmitirían partidos gratis por MLB.tv. Así las cosas, no pudimos dejar pasar la oportunidad de ver algunos de los primeros partidos y nos decantamos por el que se realizaría en el Salt River Field, en Scottsdale, AZ; entre los DiamondBacks de Arizona y los Rockies de Colorado. Sin grandes nombres de por medio, chequeamos las alineaciones de cada escuadra en tres de los siete juegos difundidos de manera gratuita, con el fin de mirar aquel desafío donde peloteros venezolanos jugarían. Por los Rockies, abriría el venezolano Antonio Senzatela, quien forma parte de la rotación de la vinotinto que jugará el Clásico Mundial de Béisbol. En la receptoría de los Backs, estaría recibiendo los envíos Gabriel Moreno, titular de la posición en Phoenix.

Yesterday marked the first day of play in the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues, thus ending the long wait for baseball. And on MLB.com, we realized that—at least for Venezuela—games would be streamed for free on MLB.tv. So, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to watch some of the first games and chose the one being played at Salt River Field in Scottsdale, AZ, between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies. Without any big names involved, we checked the lineups for each team in three of the seven free-to-air games, hoping to find the one where Venezuelan players would be on the field. Transcurría el cierre del primer episodio y Gabriel no esperó mucho para usar los desafíos ABS, al solicitar la revisión del tercer envío a la goma cantado como "bola" y resultando en el cambio de la apreciación por "strike". Con el último bateador de ese episodio y el primero del siguiente (Braxton Fulford y Kyle Karros), los desafíos hechos en el último pitcheo de cada turno derivaron en el tercer strike, para ponchar a los peloteros quienes no le tiraron a los respectivos lanzamientos (habiendo sido cantados en "bola"). Y todo sucedió en los episodios 1 y 2, donde queda demostrado que el sistema ayudará a entregar juegos, con consecuencias más ajustadas a la realidad. El umpire de home, parecía que se enojaba con cada pedido de desafío, por lo cual imaginamos tendrá que ajustar su percepción de la zona en cada bateador. Si nos apegamos a la decisión de usar el sistema en primavera, el acierto se deriva en un período de ajuste necesario, antes que el espectáculo comience. Así las cosas, ya no se tratará de la culpa del "umpire" dada la disponibilidad de la herramienta, sino que la responsabilidad recaerá en los protagonistas del juego: los peloteros.
