¡Oh, los planes! Una temporada promedio en la MLB, se comienza a planificar mucho antes de jugarse y aunque esos planes consideran imponderables, no los puede cubrir todos. Si así fuera, existiera un roster ilimitado y una cantidad de dinero indescriptible. Pero las cosas no son así. En ésta publicación vamos a estudiar los pronósticos de pretemporada versus lo que han hecho los equipos en lo que va de contienda, cuando ha transcurrido el 10% del calendario y todavía el rumbo se puede enderezar. Solo hablaremos de aquellos conjuntos de los cuales teníamos expectativas muy altas y que han decepcionado hasta el momento. Tomaremos en cuenta factores como: el roster, la posición del equipo en la tabla, ofensiva y su cuerpo de pitcheo. En el este de la Americana, los Azulejos y los Medias Rojas, estaban llamados a liderar junto a los Yankees. Pero ya puede mi amado lector percibir el cómo están saliendo las cosas. Man, the best-laid plans! A standard MLB season starts coming together way before Opening Day, and even though front offices try to account for every wild card, you just can't cover it all. If they could, we’d see unlimited rosters and a payroll through the roof. But that’s not how the game works. In this post, we’re breaking down preseason projections versus how teams are actually performing now that we’re 10% into the schedule—still enough time to right the ship. We’re focusing on the high-expectation squads that have been a total bust so far, looking at their 26-man roster, standings, bats, and the pitching staff. In the AL East, the Jays and the Sox were supposed to be neck-and-neck with the Bronx Bombers, but you can already see the wheels coming off. The Blue Jays basically need a full-blown field hospital right now; they’ve been hit so hard by the injury bug that they had to pull the trigger on an early-season trade just yesterday to bring Lenyn Sosa from the Chi-Sox up to the Great White North.

Meanwhile, the Sox are in the same boat: their bats are just okay, though they should be a lot hotter given the talent on the 26-man, and their arms have been a major letdown. The Venezuelan southpaw Ranger Suárez just barely notched his first W, and Crochet hasn't looked like his usual dominant self. With 75 runs allowed in 139.1 frames, those arms need to start throwing strikes and finding the zone fast. Over in the AL Central, the Detroit Tigers are already hitting the panic button in the front office. Even the usually untouchable Tarik Skubal has had a rough start, leaving Framber Valdez and the rookie Kevin McGonigle as the only ones really grinding. But as Tigers history shows, a single ace (like the Verlander days) and one big slugger (like Miggy) aren't enough to punch a ticket to the World Series.

Over in the AL West, the panic button is glowing red for the M's. But honestly, I don't think it'll stay that way for long. Yeah, they're sitting in fourth, but that’s strictly on their ice-cold bats. Their rotation and pen are absolutely dealing (a collective 2.95 ERA), but the offense is hitting a dismal .208 clip, ranking 28th out of 30 teams. You just can't plate runs like that. Brendan Donovan and Randy Arozarena are the only ones showing any signs of life in the batter's box. We'll see how it shakes out. Now, the NL East... the Mets... man, it’s always the Mets. When is a plan actually going to click for these guys from the jump? They’ve got a mountain to climb if they want to stay in the postseason hunt. They look nothing like the team we picked to win the pennant in our preseason projections. Hopefully, they can turn it around so they don't make this writer look too bad. And what’s the deal in the NL Central?

¡Ay, los Cachorros! A veces pecamos de ingenuos, pero las señales y los papeles estaban allí. Sólo para recopilar y dar a los oseznos como favoritos. No están con un balance peor (.438) porque el pitcheo ha sido regular, pero los bates están helados con AVE .229. Prefiero aquellos tiempos donde las previsiones importaban ¿Cómo se puede tener un roster así y estar de últimos en la división? Dicho esto, el oeste de la Nacional nos deja con el manager Tony Vitello de los Gigantes de San Francisco haciendo el ridículo, con un equipo que -en el papel- debería estar peleando la punta con los Dodgers. Si no han tenido peor desempeño es porque sus bates no están tan dormidos como pareciera...es el cuerpo de lanzadores quienes no han estado a la altura de las expectativas creadas sobre ellos. Con una EFE colectiva de 4.38, tendrán que hilar más fimo si desean remontar ésta división. Ya no para aspirar a quitársela a los esquivadores (quienes lucen inalcanzables), sino para buscar algún cupo dentro de los comodines de la liga. Algunos de los mencionados estamos seguros, van a remontar el lugar que ahora ostentan, de otra manera nos tendremos que dedicar a la pesca.

If they haven't tanked even further, it’s only because their lineup isn't as asleep as it looks... it's the pitching corps that hasn't lived up to the hype. With a 4.38 collective ERA, they’re going to have to paint the corners and execute a lot better if they want to climb back up. At this point, they're not even looking to catch the Blue Crew (who look untouchable), but just to snag a Wild Card spot. I’m betting some of these teams will bounce back and find their rhythm; otherwise, I’m going to have to hang it up and take up fishing.
