I pulled out two long-retired laptops from the bottom of the storage bin. A damp, musty smell mixed with dust hit me at once, and their heavy weight pressed down on my palms. The edges of the cases were worn and chipped, with paint peeling off.
I pressed the power button. A slow hum started up, and the power light came on. They hadn’t been turned on in years—just getting them to boot was a win. I held my breath, scared they might shut off halfway. I tapped the Enter key gently, watching lines of unfamiliar process text pop up on the screen, hoping they’d keep running a bit longer.
Opening the drives, I found D, E, F and G packed with old work reports, blurry team outing photos, youthful graduation shots, and random snaps from business trips. The file names weren’t new to me, but their contents felt so far away—memories had long turned into a fuzzy blur.
After sorting and deleting files, I copied some photos to an external hard drive. Honestly, there was no real need to keep them anymore. But listening to the old laptops’ fans whirring weakly, I suddenly wanted to squeeze those days—almost lost to time—into the drive a little tighter.
Who knows when I’ll look at these photos again? But with the screens still glowing right now, I just can’t help holding onto a little more of the past.
