An Unusual Icicle Sight on a Winter Night: How Did Willow Twigs Frost Over at 2℃?
I came across a weird scene during a winter night walk: my phone said it was 2℃ outside, but the weeping willow twigs by the river were covered in clusters of icicles, glistening like tiny broken diamonds. The icicles weren’t evenly spread—some twigs were full of them, others had none at all.
I stood there for ages, squinting through the fence to get a clearer look. The gurgling of the nearby fountain drifted over, carrying a chill in the air. Common sense says water freezes at 0℃, so how did these icicles form on such a "warm" night?
A quick online check uncovered the trick: localized low temperatures. After dark, the willow twigs lost heat fast through radiation, making their surface way colder than the air—even below 0℃. Tiny water droplets from the fountain stuck to the twigs. Their heat was quickly drawn away by the cold branches, and with the bark’s rough texture and dust as natural freezing spots, the droplets turned to ice right away, no need to get extra cold.
Meanwhile, the river below kept flowing. Its large volume allowed better heat exchange, staying a steady 2℃.
A soft breeze made the icicles sway gently, and lamplight danced on the water. In that moment, I couldn’t help but marvel at this lovely, rule-defying sight.
