I headed back to the fountain today. It was 4°C, and the wind was picking up — I checked those willow twigs that had ice on them a couple days ago. Sure enough, the ice was long gone, with only branches swaying in the breeze.
Now I know for sure: that weird patch of ice (when it was 2°C and calm) was just a mix of "supercooled mist, the twigs losing heat fast, and still air". Now it’s warmer and windier, so the ice melted right away.
I walked deeper into the park and found it glowing with lights:
Trees along the path were wrapped in warm yellow string lights, with star and ball lanterns hanging from the branches. The light spilled onto the lake, matching the window lights of the distant tall buildings.
The lake-center pavilion’s eaves glowed warmly. A bright pink ball light sat on a lakeside rock, with tiny string lights around it. The water was half smooth, half rippled — my casual photo looked like a fake, it was so pretty.
Up close, the string lights wrapped the trunks in yellow circles. Red, pink and yellow balls nested in the bare branches — like stars in the city. The wind was cold, but the lights wrapped the plants and pavilion, making everything feel warm.
