I was sitting on the bus, daydreaming. Suddenly, I saw a huge dark cloud. The power poles, the fields, even the sky — they were full of birds. There were so many that it gave me goosebumps.
The bus was moving fast, so I couldn’t see them clearly. They were smaller than magpies but bigger than sparrows, all black, flying in a large flock. I quickly took a few blurry photos. Later, I asked AI to identify them. It said they were Daurian jackdaws. I had never heard of them before.
I looked them up. They are related to crows. Adult birds have a light gray ring around their necks, like a small scarf. Young birds don’t have it — they are completely black. In winter, they gather in huge groups, sometimes in the thousands, looking for food near farms and villages. They are common in northern rural areas, and some fly south for the winter.
That afternoon, some birds were circling in the sky. Some lined up on the wires like musical notes. Others hopped across the bare fields. The empty land was covered with small black dots.
I can’t fully describe how I felt. It wasn’t fear, and it wasn’t excitement. It was more like a sudden tight feeling in my chest. The scene just felt strange.
Was it a good sign or a bad sign? I don’t know. Some people believe crows are unlucky. Others say they are caring birds because they feed their parents. I only know that I can’t forget that moment. For a few seconds, it felt like I was facing something ancient — as if I had briefly locked eyes with nature’s timeless order. It left me with a feeling of awe and wonder.
