Keeping our opinion to ourselves
Is it just me, or are some people just annoyingly nosy?
Now before you jump on my head, allow me to explain.
There are people who genuinely do not understand the simple art of minding their business — and honestly, it's exhausting.
Let me paint a picture. A few days ago, I saw this gorgeous dress that I really liked. I mean, it gave everything it needed to give — classy, confident, and just my vibe. So there I was, happily discussing price with the seller, when from nowhere, this woman — probably in her 40s or early 50s — appeared beside me and hit me with that classic Nigerian mother tone:
“My daughter 🙄, this gown is short ooo. Why don’t you collect a longer one? How will a responsible man see you in this kind of thing?”
😩 AHHH.
The way anger rushed through my veins, I’m telling you — it took every ounce of home training in me not to reply the way I was feeling. Not because I agreed, but because in Nigeria, respecting your elders isn’t just expected — it’s ingrained. Optional, yes… but my conscience won’t even let me choose the “optional” route. 😤
But guess what? That wasn't even the most painful part.
The seller decided to add her own unsolicited commentary:
“My sister, that’s what we see in the hands of these our young girls ooo... Wearing short short things… But me, my own is just to sell market.”
Excuse me???
You see, if you’re Nigerian, you know this tone. You know exactly the way it sounds. That condescending, dramatic, I-know-better tone. 😩
At that point, I just walked away. Angry. Embarrassed. And still dressless. And as I walked off, they went on muttering about “how girls of today don’t have respect.”
ME?! As respectful as I am? I just weak.
Honestly, the moral of the story is this: just mind your business.
If you want respect, then remember that respect is reciprocal. You can’t shame someone and then expect to be honored for it.
It costs zero naira to keep your opinion to yourself — especially when nobody asked.
I know nobody here is that nosy sha… right? 😌

The moral of the story: you should have stood your ground and buy the dress. Respect goes both ways and no one has any business telling you what to do or judge your decisions. They disrespected your decision and you obey them by doing what they impose you? You need to learn to ignore them. Trying to fit the mood and the expectations of others will lead to a miserable life. Stand up for yourself.
Some societies have a lot of growing up to do. It's unbelievable honestly. I've never seen anything like this my whole life. It's your business and no one else's.
It's disheartening... The reason I didn't buy it wasn't because of their opinion it was because I couldn't bring myself to buy from someone with such mentality.... Truly some infact many societies have a lot of growing up to do ❤️
If the seller was against you as well, then you did good by not buying the dress. They don't deserve the profit. But otherwise, you need to learn to not listen to them. They have no right to rule your life.
