RE: Low Power Mode

Having the ability to operate our home off the grid is a dream of mine too! Since we've moved away from the city we experience quite a bit more power outages (frequency and duration) and my mind just goes into self-preservation mode during bad weather events like we've seen these past few weeks. In the short term we're relying on a massive power station to run the pellet stove fan and auger for supplemental heat and we can also plug the fridge into this if we needed too. This only gives us around twelve hours though. My goal is to have solar and a powerwall set up eventually but I doubt it'll be in this house I'll probably wait until we downsize into something smaller and more sustainable.
That's good that you can run your heat off it it. We can't because we have a high efficiency furnace and those require generators that put out a clean power signal. Honda is one of the premier brands that does that, but it comes at a premium. We have an infrared space heater we can move around if the need arises, then we just swap between our sump and fridge as we need it. The good thing is in the winter, the sump doesn't run much. I agree with you about downsizing and it becoming more practical then.
